<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The blurb: Determined to escape the relentless bustle of big city living, Nathan Gardner (Nicolas Cage) relocates his family to the remote New England farm where he was raised. Still coming to terms with recent personal hardships, the Gardners are looking forward to a new, happier chapter in life. But their plans are abruptly interrupted when a meteor crash lands on their property, bringing with it a mysterious alien force that infects and mutates first the land, and then the people it comes into contact with.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Our verdict: To sum up the plot in just one sentence, is: Nic Cage is an alpaca farmer who sees his life descend into madness when a meteor hits his property. If you're looking for Nicolas Cage go full rage Cage, you're in for a treat.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We start a bit sloppy with a cape-wearing Wicca Lavinia (Madeleine Arthur, Christine from To All the Boys I've Loved Before) doing a spell to save her mum from cancer. She then runs into Ward, a hydrologist researching the quality of the nearby river to asses the construction of a dam. They like what they see and Ward comes back to the farm maybe to get some samples, we don't know. In the farm we also meet Lavinia's two brothers Benny (Brendan Meyer, The OA) <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">and Jack (Julian Hilliard, who will be in The Conjuring 3 soon), one a stoner, one a cute little dinosaur fan.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">For a family so moden and in tune with latest technologies, it's odd they live in the middle of nowhere raising alpacas. When Lavinia's parents embrace in the porch, Nic Cage leans in for some ear kissing and tells he's super horny, that it's been six months since the operation and since they last did it. TMI. While they're having sex, a meteor hits the farm and inside it, there's something that affects space-time in the farm and changes everything it touches.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Suddenly we have a mix of Far Cry: New Dawn neon-apocalypse aesthetics and some brilliant overacting by all involved. Color Out Of Space is based on a HP Lovecraft short tale deemed part of his ‘unfilmable’ cosmic philosophies. Richard Stanley gives a shot and tries to bring Lovecraft's stylish sci-fi tale to the big screen with some good moments and lots of colour. To be fair it fits more as a straming series with the likes of Stranger Things and The OA - where it would have had the freedom to be as silly and funny as it could, develop more of the story, and relationships.

The blurb: A darkness swirls at the centre of a world-renowned dance company, one that will engulf the artistic director, an ambitious young dancer, and a grieving psychotherapist. Some will succumb to the nightmare. Others will finally wake up.

Our verdict: Lol what? Did you read the blurb 👆?

Let's unpack that: Suspiria is a remake of a classic 1977 horror, written and directed by Dario Argento (Asia Argento's dad). It's ok if you've never heard of it - it's kind of a cult film seen by a lot of film school rejects. Apparently it's good.

After director Luca Guadagnino's huge (and deserved) success with Call Me By Your Name - packed full of romance, sex, and sunshine in Italy - this is a 180º pirouette.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Set in 1977 Berlin (see what they did there?) in the Markos Dance Academy, Tilda Swinton (chic and intense) is Madame Blanc - the creative director and headmistress of an all-girls company. On a rainy afternoon, Susie Bannion (Dakota Johnson, better than ever) arrives from Ohio or something and tries to join the group. In her audition, she connects with some powerful forces that live in this old, forgotten building. There's something brewing under the wooden planks, bouncing with her every jump.

It gets pretty bonkers from here - we discover that some of the women are witches and dancing is like casting a spell. Womanhood is presented as a sensual, powerful, hypnotic power, but what to do with it?

The pace is set like a slow metronome and the details are unveiled without any rush. It's freaking gorgeous. It's long and repetitive, with loud screams of artsy nightmares. The third act, when it finally arrives, is so over the top and stylised you can almost feel the screen breathing. It's beautiful, it's sexy, it's gory, but most of all - incredibly satisfying.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">GG♥SF rating: ♥♥♥<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">♥<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">♥

Damn, Dakota, we're under your spell.

The blurb: Starr Carter is constantly switching between two worlds: the poor,
mostly black, neighbourhood where she lives - and the rich, mostly white,
prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is
shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best
friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Now, facing pressures
from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up
for what's right. The Hate U Give is based on the critically acclaimed bestseller by Angie Thomas and stars Amandla Stenberg.

Our verdict: The Hate U Give has everything: love story, social activism, finding who your true friends are, discovering your parents are people, how to handle pressures from society, and finding your voice. It's a coming of age story for the new generation but it's also much more - it's a wake up call.

The target audience is teenagers - especially girls like Starr (played so superbly by Amandla Stenberg that we can't tell where the character ends and the actress begins). At the same time, all the themes portrayed in the film are so universally poignant that we actually heard a grown man sob during one of the most emotionally charged scenes we've ever seen.

Yes, there are some issues with the story: Starr's friends are so insufferably white they become caricatures, the baddie does a baddie stare whenever he's on screen, but this is a film about a girl finding who she is after witnessing her best friend die in front of her. If there are some black and white concepts, made all the more stark because this adolescent is just starting to discover that life is full of grey areas.

We loved it - with all its flaws and beautiful moments. The Hate U Give is a powerful, complex drama that deals with police brutality with grace. It's also an angry coming of age story that resents having to be told, but hopefully will make some people sit up and think.

The Blurb: Thelma is a young biology student living away from her strict family for the first time. While she attempts to enjoy her new-found independence, her parents’ influence remains palpable, thanks to regular phone calls in which they check up on their daughter’s every move. But Thelma’s life is turned upside down when she meets beautiful classmate Anja, whose presence appears to awaken long-dormant, supernatural powers within her.

Our verdict: Director Joachim Trier (not related to Lars Von) has had some success in film festivals, showing his films in Cannes, Toronto and Istanbul - but they failed to get a wider mainstream recognition. His latest film Thelma is, what we hope, his ticket to a big audience.

We follow the life of Thelma (Eili Harboe), who after living under her mum and dad's strict, religious rules, finds herself enjoying her new found freedom at university quite a lot. Even though she has to live with the guilt of sharing her experiences with her parents in constant phone calls, she doesn't hold back. Especially when she meets Anja, a new friend who invites Thelma to be part of a normal, experimental uni life.

What could be considered textbook first year experiences - parties, drinks, some smoke, some bi-curiosity - all feel very new and intense to Thelma, and she starts to experience supernatural, telekinetic powers. Having suppressed them for such a long time, she neither understand or control her actions. Sometimes the consequences are beyond her imagination, even if they're her own doing.

It's an arthouse Carrie set in Norwegian snowy surroundings and using that characteristic Nordic calm detached mood that is almost its own genre. Beautifully shot and with striking reveals, Thelma is not only super scary, but sensual and original.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The Blurb: Clara is a care worker living on the outskirts of São Paulo. Struggling to make ends meet, she accepts the position of live-in nanny to the as-yet unborn child of a wealthy single woman named Ana. The two women immediately develop a strong bond, but Ana’s increasingly strange behaviour hints at a deep, dark secret. Then, one night, the shocking truth emerges.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Our Verdict: This was very unexpected - even the blurb had us wondering how much we wanted to know before watching it. We went for it without any information or warning and boy, did it pay off. If you, just like us, want to maintain the mystery before watching it, read no further. Not to do ourselves an injustice but it's worth the risk.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">For the curious among you, Good Manners begins as a societal analysis, Clara is a poor black maid coming to work (and live) with a spoiled, skinny white girl (Ana) in an affluent area of São Paulo. But things become tense when Clara sees how lonely and unprepared Ana is for imminent parenthood, and their story develops into a preggo-lesbian-interracial-interclass romance. And it gets even weirder when Ana starts displaying a strange combination of symptoms reminiscent of well known tales about vampires and werewolves. When the baby is born, he's somewhere in between - something similar to the local monster chupa-cabra. But Clara loves him, just like she loved his mother.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Believe it or not, we haven't begun to tell you the plot. All this action happens in the first third of the film. It's incredible. Suffice it to say that if you're planning to see just one Brazilian supernatural-lesbian-chupa-cabra romance this year, make it Good Manners.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">A very original tale of love in the big city.

From the minds of The League of Gentlemen's Jeremy Dyson and Derren Brown's chum Andy Nyman, it was<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;"> bold and terrifying<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">. During this year's LFF, the creators unveiled their film adaptation of the same story, but with added tension and screams. Here are our five reasons to watch it.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">Andy plays the main character - Professor Goodman, a <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">paranormal debunker who likes to think of himself as a Mister M of the supernatural. He guides us through the story, trying to solve three mysteries left unsolved by his idol, a former parapsychologist haunted by his own failure.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">

On stage his skills were even more powerful - it's a different experience altogether - but you can't help but to get deeply involved in his descent into unexplained events. They might even explain a thing or two about his character's past before becoming a Professor.

We know and we've seen the other three fly into very established careers of writers, actors and directors (including Sherlock, Game of Thrones, Inside No. 9, Doctor Who and more). Jeremy, being the only one who is not a great actor (his words, not ours) has kept it less ambitious than his mates and wrote play adaptations and played smaller parts in TV shows. This film is his best work since The League of Gentlemen and it has some of the distinct weirdness from the show.

I mean, we were re-watching The Office the other day and he was so adorable and at the same time so... Martin Freeman. Yes, all his characters do have very similar traits of anxiety, stuttering and ticks, but they are always brilliant and we will always love whatever he's in. Big fans here.

The Blurb: Kristen Stewart plays Maureen, a medium working in Paris as a personal shopper for a megalomaniacal A-list celebrity. Bored and frustrated by her job, Maureen only remains in France in an attempt to reach the spirit of her recently deceased twin brother. As time goes by, contact looks increasingly unlikely, until Maureen begins to receive strange text messages from an unknown source.

Our Verdict: We're so proud of our K-Stew. She is so fearless in choosing her roles, it's a joy to see her career explore so many different independent daring flicks. In Personal Shopper, Maureen deals with a murder mystery plot with a supernatural twist, inside a cool fashionista routine. It could be three different films rolled into one big mess but the meticulous direction from Olivier Assayas makes it all coherent and enigmatic. Kristen's screen presence is almost constant (we can't remember a scene she's not in) and spooky enough to keep the audience completely hooked.

The Blurb: 12-year-old Conor (Lewis MacDougall is extraordinary) is bullied by his classmates because he sees the world differently. His mother (Felicity Jones), with whom he has a very special bond, is suffering from a terminal illness. His bossy grandmother (Sigourney Weaver) has become increasingly controlling. And his unreliable father (Toby Kebbell) is perpetually absent. Suddenly, a wizened and mysterious yew tree materialises to provide Conor with some much-needed guidance (Liam Neeson’s voice is the perfect combination of melodic and imposing).

Our Verdict: Growing up sucks. Especially when you're stuck in that period of life when you're not a kid anymore, but not an adult yet. Coming of Age stories are a popular subgenre of movies because there's so much to be distilled from this rite of passage in life. 'Inside Out' thrived in the metaphysical representation of feelings themselves as creatures with feelings. But what if feelings were your current worst nightmare?

Conor has to deal with quite a lot of pain in his life without having the emotional maturity to fully comprehend what is happening. One night, a yew-tree-monster with fatherly stern voice (Liam Neeson has the best voice for the job, no doubts) appears in his dreams - or day dreams - to guide him through all the emotions. In the same way that 'Life of Pi' showed that sometimes fantastic tales are the best way of recounting a terrible real life event, the Yew Tree shows Conor that life is complex and we are only humans.

Even though the film does verge on rather slobbery moments, it's impossible not to recognise our own life stories and difficult emotions watching Conor's struggle with his dying mother. In a cathartic way, it's also the perfect film to let it go and surrender to the tears, over and over, and think of loved ones. It's probably a film directed to an audience still with a lot of growing up to do, but oh boy, we adults definitely needed that.

Director Denis Villeneuve's (Sicario, Prisioners) new film Arrival blends full on doomsday alien invasion with family drama and a truckload of emotions. It's based on Ted Chiang’s novella 'Story of Your Life' and we can't help but to consider it an instant classic. Probably more related to 'Inception' than 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind', Arrival is melancholic, visually arresting, complex and deeply satisfying.

Here are our 5 reasons to watch it.

1. Dr Louise Banks

What a badass. If there's ever an alien invasion, imagine you being the chosen one to communicate with the new beings. It's a terrifying thought, but also probably the most exciting thing that could ever happen to anyone. Not only is she the one called but she actually breaks through and cracks the code.

So yeah, her expertise is evidently there. But who is she? Is she a struggling mother without a child, a la Dr Ryan Stone in Gravity? It would seem so for a bit, but Amy Adams takes her character's vulnerability and spontaneity to a whole new level. She's not a three dimensional character, we need to calculate some new dimensions to really grasp her.

In a world where everybody else seem to be men (including the aliens, come on!) she's the most interesting character by far.

2. The Aliens

The most delicate moment of any alien invasion movie is the reveal. What they look like, how they sound, how they act in presence of humans. In Arrival, this is resolved quite early in the film in an incredibly sensitive way. The aliens' visuals, language, sound, technology, spaceships (or shells) - they're all marvellous to watch and we feel as giddy as Dr Banks discovering them.

3. Humanity

Humans gonna human. A militarised operation is still made of humans who are afraid of the unknown and would do anything to sabotage themselves for the sake of feeling in control. Arrival does not shy away from all the ugliness in the world and how flawed we are, especially when we are afraid.

4. Sound and OST

Arrival sounds incredible. The big helicopters arriving in the middle of the night, the first time we hear the aliens, Jóhann Jóhannsson's (Sicario, Theory of Everything) ever present soundtrack. They all contribute to the cold, claustrophobic strangeness of it all.

5. Denis Villeneuve

After Sicario and Prisioners, he's one to watch out for. Villeneuve's style of complex dramas without falling into any cliches is quite remarkable and feels very fresh. We can't wait to see what he does next with an even bigger budget and another sci-fi classic in his hand: Blade Runner 2049. Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto, Robin Wright, Dave Bautista and Harrison Ford have all been linked to the project. And Jóhann Jóhannsson has confirmed he's doing the original soundtrack again. It's going to be sooo good.

Lisa Caskey has been writing poetry and stories ever since she was a young girl. “The Farmed” is her debut novel as Part 1 of a Trilogy, with the remaining books to be released over the coming months.

Set in a futuristic San Francisco in 2093 where a surveillance state of control and monotonous routine is the norm, Winnie, a seemingly regular teenager, gets flung into an underground world where nothing will ever be the same again. She discovers that she’s not so ‘normal’ after all, when realizing she can communicate telepathically and has super human strength.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Back in 2008, Hayao Miyazaki penned the manga series Kaze Tachinu (The Wind Rises), inspired by Tatsuo Hori's ‘The Wind is Risen’, a fictional story based on Jiro Horikoshi, designer of the infamous Zero Plane used during the Pearl Harbour bombings.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Hailed as Miyazaki’s last offering for Studio Ghibli following his retirement from film making, The Wind Rises explores adult themes that are a world apart from some of his more fantastical films, such as Spirited Away.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">It may not be Ghibli as you know it but Miyazaki’s swan-song is a beautifully crafted film, made all the more poignant by the fact that it is his last gift to the studio.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Here are five reasons to watch:
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">#1 Japanese history lesson
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The Wind Rises is ultimately an adult anime with a historical context. With a distinct lack of soot sprites or talking cats, the story follows Jiro Hirokoshi during the first part of the 20th century in the lead up to the Second World War. As a young boy Jiro dreams of flying airplanes, but after he is visited by Italian aircraft designer Caproni during an early dream sequence, he decides to become an aircraft designer instead. We follow his journey as he is caught up in the Great Kanto Earthquake and then goes to work for an airplane manufacturer, eventually moving to Germany where he designs The Zero. It’s a snapshot of pre war Japan and the dreams and aspirations of a man who, a lot like Miyazaki, had a vision and worked hard to achieve it.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">#2 Metaphorical undertones
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">In Jiro, we have a man who designed fighter planes (machines that dropped bombs and caused death and devastation) but we are also given a dreamer. This is a man who was fascinated by the mechanics of aviation and went on to design planes which are described to him by Caproni as being 'beautiful dreams'. In an early scene we watch as one of Jiro’s planes plummets to the ground and crashes, an event which haunts him and is referenced again later as we see him surveying the wreckage in a dream. We are given indication that Jiro feels regret, but this is never really expanded upon. He is portrayed as a man with a dream, who perhaps never fully realises his role in the war. It’s almost as if Miyazaki is absolving Jiro of responsibility, but the reason is less than clear. Miyazaki, as a renowned pacifist, has chosen an angle which seems to contradict his own beliefs, and it is in this that the film garners more than a little confusion.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">#3 Romantic sub-plot
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">We are distracted further from the subject of war by the fictionalised love story between Jiro and Nahoko, a woman he meets on a train just before the earthquake strikes. He leads Nahoko and her injured maid to safety, but it’s years later before they are reunited during a chance meeting in Germany. A sense of melancholy shrouds the whole film, and the love story enhances this. Nahoko suffers from tuberculosis and her condition worsens as she leaves the sanatorium where she is supposed to be recovering so that she can be with Jiro. It seems as if Miyazaki wants to show us a softer side to Jiro, and perhaps make him appear more sensitive than history suggests. Again, the reason is unclear. The underlying theme of war and devastation is watered down to the point that it becomes secondary to Jiro’s personal plight.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">#4 Breathtaking animation
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Ghibli films are known for their intensely detailed animation, and The Wind Rises is no exception. From the opening dream sequence where the young Jiro Hirokoshi takes to the skies in an aeroplane, to the terrifying scenes of destruction as the Great Kanto Earthquake rips through Tokyo. Miyazaki manages to conjure up a feeling of beauty within chaos, and takes us on a visual journey from plane crashes and natural disaster to intimate portrayals of family life and humorous exchanges. This understated approach to disaster distracts us from the underpinning theme of war, and the film becomes more about Jiro and his personal dreams and aspirations.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">#5 Soundbites
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Visually stunning, but also aurally intoxicating, The Wind Rises uses voiced sound effects. From the whirring of a plane’s propellers to the sound of the earth rumbling as it splits open during the Great Kanto Earthquake, these humanistic sounds lure you deeper into the beauty of the film.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">GG♥SF Verdict: ♥♥♥♥♥
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The Wind Rises is a complex film that has many layers. On the surface it can be watched as a beautifully animated film about a young man who fulfils his dream of designing airplanes, and falls in love. But it’s the deeper symbolism that is the real draw of the film. Children may be bored by the lack of surreal characters and off the wall scenarios, it’s a film that definitely doesn’t have universal appeal like many other Ghibli creations, but while Disney continue to churn out colourful monsters and talking cars, Miyazaki has given us a final film that while much less accessible, will keep us thinking long after we have left the cinema.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
The Blurb: Maud (Carey Mulligan) has worked hard and exploitative hours in the same factory job since she was a girl; her only respite is the affection of her husband (Ben Whishaw) and their sweet young son. When her deepening friendships with fellow worker Violet (Anne-Marie Duff) and activist Edith Ellyn (Helena Bonham Carter) fuel her sense of injustice, she commits to the suffrage cause.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Maud joins at the same time that the movement becomes more radical and violent, spurred on by the rousing leadership of Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep) and in reaction to the increasingly hostile interventions of the state. In joining the fight for equality, she unites with women who risk their jobs, their homes, their children and their lives.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Our Verdict: When Suffragette was announced as the opening film for this year's LFF, we were very excited to see Meryl Streep, Helena Bonham Carter and Carey Mulligan acting one of the most revolutionary movements for women's rights. It was the dream team! Somehow, though, the story didn't get the cinematic treatment it deserved.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Maud (Mulligan) is a fictional character, based on letters and testimonies from the time. Coming from the lower class of society, she was born and raised inside a steamy laundry in East London, where she worked since she was seven years old. We don't know whether it was the fact that Maud was created from smushed together bits of real life ladies, or her stilted dialogue, fit for a TV drama, but somehow our heroine's story became unnecessarily bland.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Emmeline Pankhurst (Streep), meanwhile, appears for a mere five minutes, when she delivers an inspiring speech (do you want to bet she'll get an Oscar nomination for it?) but is never seen or mentioned again. Helena Bonham Carter's character Edith, is probably the most interesting of all, but again fails to keep the pace up.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">In the end, Suffragettes tuned out to be a non-story, just a series of frustrating attempts to convince men we women should have a voice. And in that sense, the film draws some parallels with our life today and society's expectations of being a woman, a mother and a professional. Some things have improved drastically, and some haven't changed at all.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Director Sarah Gavron says she hopes the film leads to many other movies about the movement and we share that wish. It's not a bad film, it's just not the definite adaptation of the movement.
The Martian

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Directed by Sir Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Alien) and starring a veritable who’s who in Hollywood, including Matt Damon (Bourne series, The Adjustment Bureau), Jessica Chastain (Interstellar, Zero Dark Thirty) and Jeff Daniels (Dumb and Dumber, The Newsroom), The Martian is based on Andy Weir’s 2011 eponymous book.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meagre supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Here’s five reasons you should trip down to the cinema to watch The Martian.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Matt Damon

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">It’s no secret that we’re huge Matt Damon fans at GG♥SF HQ (hello, he *is* Jason Bourne), but it’s no easy feat to carry a movie all by your lonesome for 40 minutes (unless you’re Tom Hanks), especially when the only dialogue uttered is rhetorical. But Damon does a great job as astronaut Mark Watney, able to convey the frustration, helplessness and loneliness of his situation.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Damon also gets to show off his comedic sensibilities with a series of wisecracks and one-liners – which has the potential to become a little wearing, but as we love him, we’ll overlook this. Us, biased? You betcha.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">As we’ve come to expect from any Ridley Scott movie, the special effects and picture compositions are beautifully realised and epic in their scale. Crammed with gorgeously composed shots in space, grand sweeping Martian vistas, and some truly fantastic 3D sequences, Scott flexes his master filmmaker skills with aplomb – it’s a striking, celluloid treat for your eyeballs.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">The casting team (Carmen Cuba, Nina Gold) clearly have a touch of genius about them, assembling a fine cast of leading actors, all perfectly suited to their roles. From Jeff Daniels' irate, and initially suspect, NASA Director, to Kristen Wiig’s fun turn as the manic head of public relations and Chiwetel Ejiofor as programme director Vincent Kapoor, all the performances are solid.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Finally, can we just reference Jessica Chastain’s brilliant turn as Commander Lewis? Love. Her. From the man who first brought us the great Ellen Ripley and Thelma & Louise, we’ve always associated Scott with powerful female characters and it’s great to see him revert back to excellent form (we’re looking at you, Prometheus. We’re looking at you).
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Written by American author Andy Weir and adapted for the screen by Drew Goddard, the Martian is a story about survival that celebrates human ingenuity without that overwhelming whiff of cheese, so prevalent in many main stream movies. Although there are still a few cringe-worthy moments (Go America, GO!), this is all rather niftily offset with pithy quips and a tangible suspense that keeps the film feeling taunt.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">With Gambit set to hit cinema screens in just over a year, it looks like Anna Paquin won’t be reprising her role Rogue.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">However, there might still be a chance that the actress could make an appearance, as she later added: "I was asked and answered with the information that I currently have. <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
Gambit recently suffered a back after its director Rupert Wyatt had to quit due to scheduling conflicts. <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Warners Bros has finally found their lead for the Hollywood live action adaptation of the Japanese Manga, Death Note, with Paper Town’s Nat Wolff securing the role.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
Variety reports that Wolff is in the final stage of negotiations and will play the studios equivalent of Light Yagami – a student who discovers a notebook that gives him to ability to kill anybody who’s name he writes in it. He then begins to take the law into his own hands.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
So it looks like the project is finally getting off the ground, and Wolff’s casting comes just months after the news that Adam Wingard (The Woods) would be directing the film.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
News of the film has definitely divided the Death Note fanbase since Warner’s acquired the rights five years ago, with the manga already receiving an anime series, live action films in 2006 and most recently a live action TV series in Japan.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
So while news of an English-language adaptation was to be expected, previous experience of these types of adaptations don’t tend to fill fans with much hope (Dragonball Evolution anyone?).

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Only time will tell.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
Production for Death Note is set to kick off in 2016.

A Men In Black Reboot's Comin'

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">It looks like Men Is Black is next on the list for the reboot treatment, however it looks like the the new trilogy will not include Will Smith.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Smith played the lead role alongside Tommy Lee-Jones as Agent J in the original three films, but it looks like the Suicide Squad star is unlikely to return to the latest attempt to revive the franchise.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter the producers of the films, Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald, revealed that the new films “will be reinvented as a trilogy” and that it was unlikely that Smith would return.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">This isn’t the first movie revival that Smith has turned down recently. He decided not to reprise his role in the long awaited Independence Day 2 and the recently announced Bad Boys sequels. And while some might say that Smith is being a bit of a spoil sport and raining on our nostalgic-parade, others could say that maybe he just knows when to let a good thing go.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">So for now it looks like Men in Black 4, 5 and 6 are definitely on the table, and no doubt we’ll be hearing more about it soon.
The Messenger

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">The Messenger is a supernatural drama starring Robert Sheehan and Lily Cole. It tells the tale of Jack, a young man tormented by his past and haunted by the dead, desperate for some peace. Called upon to help bring comfort to grieving families he struggles between his sense of duty and his saving own sanity.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Sound interesting? Here's Geeky Girl Julia's verdict...
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">#1 Robert Sheehan
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Most of you, I'm sure, will recognise Robert Sheehan as the loveable Irish scamp from E4's much missed Misfits or as, well, the lovable Irish scamp in the relatively recent TV version of The Borrowers. We're used to seeing Robert play a character who laughs or lightheartedly pokes fun at those around him so the character of Jack is a great departure. That being said, even his misanthropic attitude and dishevelled appearance in The Messenger cannot disguise those those magnificent cheekbones or sexy swagger. Jack is tormented by appearances of the recently deceased which has turned him into a darkly comedic yet very angry man who wants nothing more than to be left alone, by the living and dead alike.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">#2 The Ensemble
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">The ethereal Lily Cole, supermodel extraordinaire and star of The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnessus plays Jack's sister Emma. The siblings both come across as just as troubled by a difficult childhood as they are by Jack's lifetime of conversations with dead people. Giving a great performance, even when playing an average, if slightly well off, woman Lily makes just about every scene she's in look like an editorial from some glossy magazine. You might also recognise David O'Hara who played Albert Runcorn in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 - best known for his spot on Dan-Rad impression!
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">#3 The Psychotherapist
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Joely Richardson is brilliantly understated as the psychotherapist, the early therapy scenes are so cleverly done that you're unsure if she is even real. Jack breaking the forth wall during these parts even leave the viewer feeling as though they (we) are the therapist.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">#4 The Look
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">The Messenger is shot in a way that nicely illustrates the isolation and loneliness Jack feels, despite being surrounded by people who want to talk to him whether that's family or the people who need his help. The use of flashbacks to the 90's offer a slightly grim sense of nostalgia (perhaps that's just because I still vividly remember the 90s!) and they go a long way to explain why Jack is the way he is.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">#5 A different take on an all-too familiar idea...
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">While someone being called upon by the dead to connect with loved ones is not a unique idea, Sixth Sense, Ghost Whisperer etc, The Messenger has a more grounded approach to talking with the dead. It's more, a chat down the pub than a ghostly apparition by candlelight. At one point Jack even casually lays the motives of primary haunter “You weren't expecting it, you have unfinished business... stop me if I'm getting any of this wrong!” There's no melodramatic emotional scene about passing on a loved ones dying wish, more how a grieving family would realistically react when some odd looking stranger turns up at the wake and claims knowledge from another world.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

With the Doctor returning to our screens this weekend, it look like we’ll be bidding farewell to another companion, as Jenna Coleman has confirmed that she will be leaving the show this season.
Although rumours last year that the actress would be leaving were quashed, fresh speculation began again earlier this week.

In an interview with Nick Grimshaw on the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show, Coleman confirmed: "I have left the TARDIS.
"Jenna Coleman made her Doctor Who debut on 1 September, 2012 as Oswin Oswald in Asylum of the Daleks. She returned on Christmas Day of that year, playing Clara and remained with the Eleventh Doctor from the following episode, The Bells of Saint John, onwards.

"She stayed on board the TARDIS for all of Peter Capaldi’s episodes to date and after filming for the last series finished, Peter commented, ‘Jenna has been absolutely brilliant. I think she’s wonderful in the show, and she’s my favourite companion.’

"But Series 9 sees the Impossible Girl’s departure although the how, why and when are all questions we’ll have to watch the new adventures to find out…

"Whatever happens, we’ll bring you the inside info first but for the time being we’ll prepare to say goodbye to Clara and good luck to Jenna. We’ll miss them both."

This definitely isn’t the last we’ll be seeing of Coleman on our TV screens. The actress has apparently traded in bright lights of the cosmos and war-worlds for some crown jewels, as she is star as Queen Victoria in a new £10 million ITV drama. Not bad at all.

Let the next companion speculation begin!

Doctor Who returns to BBC One this weekend (September 19). Check out the trailer for the new series below:

All episodes of Jessica Jones will hit Netflix on Friday November 20th.

Speaking of Luke Cage, Marvel and Netflix’s next superhero venture is also beginning to take shape.

After some pretty strong rumours, Marvel’s head of TV Jeph Loeb has confirmed that the show will debut the bio-enhanced detective Misty Knight, and she will be played by Simone Missick.

Loeb stated: “We know fans have waited years to see Misty Knight brought to life, so we had to find the right actress. Simone blew us away with her performance as the strong-willed cop on a mission.”

We are very excited to finally see the arrival of Misty Knight on our screens, and role in the show makes perfect sense – in the comics the character has been romantically linked to Danny Rand, aka Iron Fist, on numerous occasions (they were even engaged at one point), so her appearance will probably mean that we can expect to see a familiar face when Iron Fist finally hits Netflix sometime next year.

Marvel also kindly confirmed that Theo Rossi (Sons of Anarchy) will appear as the criminal Shades, and Frank Whaley (Ray Donovan) as detective Rafael Scarfe.

Luke Cage will land on Neflix in 2016.

It’s not long before shooting starts but it looks like Gambit has already hit its first major hurdle, as it has been reported that the film’s Director, Rupert Wyatt, has quit.

Wyatt had been attached to the project from the beginning, but according to The Hollywood Reporter script changes leading to an expanding budget and extended shoot has created scheduling conflicts for the director resulting in his departure.

Wyatt stated: "I was very much looking forward to working with my friend Channing and the team at Fox, but regrettably a push in the start date now conflicts with another project. I thank them for the opportunity, and I know that Gambit will make a terrific film."

So now the search is on for his replacement, and while we very much welcomed the news of a Gambit solo film, it all still feels a bit up in the air. Only a few weeks ago there were rumours that Channing Tatum (who will play the lead role as Gambit) was set leave the project, although these have proved false. Furthermore no other castings for the film have been revealed.

However, it’s not all bad news, as X-Men producer Simon Kinberg has confirmed that there will be crossovers between the X-Men mutants, Gambit and Deadpool.

In an interview with MTV, Kinberg revealed that he hopes to “cross-pollinate” the character in the future. Kinberg said: “The idea is that we've sort of reset the timeline after Days of Future Past in some ways, and if not erased, certainly allowed for change from X1, 2, 3. Everything from Days of Future Past forward, 1973, everything we set now becomes canon.

"So the Gambit movie, the Deadpool movie, will exist in a world that acknowledges whatever happened in Days of Future Past and moving forward.

"Doesn't mean they'll always interact with those characters, obviously - it's not like every movie has all the characters - but they all have to exist within the same rules."

Well as it stands, Gambit is currently set for release October 7 2016, with Deadpool hitting our screens first on Feburary 12 2016, followed by X-Men: Apocalypse in the UK on May 19.
