New Prometheus Picture Plus Spoilers From Ridley Scott

Yeah. There's not a lot to say about this one. A new image from Ridley Scott's Prometheus has been released.

There's a big fat giant head in it.

And it looks all spooky and stuff.

That's all, really.

The man himself, meanwhile, has claimed that working on the film has been “The best time I’ve had in a number of years making a movie.”

And it seems that his stars had just as much fun on the set. “It was so top secret”, Rafe Spall told Total Film. “Ridley doesn’t want people to find out about it, and one thing you learn in life is you don’t mess with Ridley!”

The interview, which can be read in full in the magazine's February issue, goes on to reveal that the plot involves an expedition to make contact with the space jockey race of aliens introduced in the 1979 original (which explains this picture released a couple of weeks ago). Scott also said that the ending evolves into “a pretty good DNA of the Alien one”.

“Fans of the genre won’t be disappointed and people who’ve never seen Alien won’t be disappointed,” added Spall. “It’s going to be brilliant…”

Prometheus hits UK cinemas on 1 June, 2012, and will be released Stateside on 8 June.

Drive Director Reveals Doctor Who Rejection

Following his hit film Drive, Nicolas Winding Refn is hot property in Hollywood at the moment. And he's a bona fide geek, which makes us love him even more.

But it seems even he wasn't good enough for Doctor Who.

The director and Whovian revealed to ShortList that he wanted to work on the BBC show, but they weren't interested.

"I would have loved to direct Doctor Who but they didn't want me," he said. "They turned me down last year."

A strange decision, you might think, but then this is the guy who described film violence as "a bit like fucking" live on BBC Breakfast. So perhaps we can understand why the Beeb didn't think him suitable to make family television.

Still, he hasn't given up on the great British institution. Refn, who has mooted the possibility of bringing Wonder Woman to the big screen, also revealed that he's a fan of classic space opera Blake's 7, saying: "Maybe if they revive Blake's 7 I could do that. I love it. It's great. That could be fun to update."

Being us, we're very intrigued to see where Refn's definition of 'fun' could take the series.

Captain America 2, Iron Man 3 To Begin Production This Year

Blimey, they must be busy little bees at Marvel. Rumour has it that the studio is planning to begin shooting upcoming superhero sequels Captain America 2 and Iron Man 3 later this year.

Iron Man 3 will start shooting on 4 May, weeks ahead of its previously published start date, and before the release of Joss 'The Great' Whedon's Avengers, reports ComicBook.com.

Captain America 2 has also been revealed to begin shooting before the end of the year.

"They're planning Captain America 2 for the end of this year, because Marvel does one film at a time," Neal McDonough, who will reprise his role as Dum Dum Dugan in the sequel, told IMDB.

"So they're going to do Thor 2 and as soon as Thor has wrapped, they'll do [Captain America] 2."

And that's not all. McDonough also revealed plans for a Nick Fury film to follow Captain America 2.

"Hopefully right after that, we'll jump into Nick Fury, because that's the one I'm looking forward to more than anything," he said.

This news, combined with recent rumours that development on the Doctor Strange movie has kicked up a gear, means that we're going to be seeing a hell of a lot of Marvel-lous stuff (see what we did there?) from our favourite comic company in the coming months.

We're not complaining.

New Hunger Games Pics Released

You all know how excited we are to see The Hunger Games realised on the big screen later this year, so there's no point waxing lyrical about it.

But there is a point in giving you yet another glimpse at the movie, with these new images released today.

The first shows 16-year-old Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) at the Reaping, waiting for District 13's tribute to be announced. But the second is a little sexier, as we see our heroine and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) clad in skintight black, about to be set on fire by stylist extraordinaire Cinna (Lenny Kravitz) - a move that will ultimately earn Katniss the dramatic moniker 'Girl on Fire'.

The Hunger Games hits cinemas in the UK and Stateside on 23 March 2012.

X-Men Return For Taylor Kitsch?

Taylor Kitsch might be busy promoting John Carter at the moment, but he hasn't forgotten his part in the X-verse as Cajun mutant Gambit.

In fact, he's not opposed to returning to the role he first portrayed in Hugh Jackman's 2009 prequel X-Men Origins: Wolverine. But he'd like to do it properly this time.

In an interview with Digital Spy, the actor said: "I'd love to do it again, but we're going to do it right and we're going to do it dark."

Sadly, though, it doesn't look like we'll see Gambit on the big screen any time soon - especially now that the franchise has been rebooted.

Shocking, eh?

Lilly Talks Hobbit Role

We reckon we'd make kick-ass elves, so we're pretty jealous of Evangeline Lilly, who gets to dress up and play as Mirkwood elf, Tauriel, in Peter Jackson's upcoming LOTR prequel, The Hobbit.

So far, the actress has kept fairly quiet about her part in the movie, but in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, she let slip a few details about the all-new warrior elf.

"She is a warrior. She’s actually the head of the Elven guard," revealed the actress.

"She’s the big shot in the army. So she knows how to wield any weapon, but the primary weapons that she uses are a bow and arrow and two daggers. And she’s lethal and deadly. You definitely wouldn’t want to be caught in a dark alley next to Tauriel.

"She’s not in the first film very much. She comes into the first film near the end, and has a very small part to play. Her role in the second film is much more involved. Although, I have to say, when I first read the scripts and took the job, she had a lot less going on in the second film. I think the role is becoming a bit more demanding than I had expected it to be. There’s a lot more for me to do now, which is a lot of fun, but it’s a little more pressure."

We're sure she's more than up to the job.

Doctor Strange Movie Rumours Resurface

We reported a while back that Marvel were working on bringing their Master of the Mystic Arts, Stephen Strange, to the big screen with Patrick Dempsey in the lead role.

But since then, gossip about the project has gone cold.

Until now.

Word is that the screenplay for the film has now been completed by Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer, who penned Conan and Sahara, and the search is on for a director.

But those hoping for a big budget production in the vein of Captain America, Thor and Iron Man will be disappointed. Doctor Strange will be a lower budget production, compared to Marvel's recent big screen efforts, and McDreamy fans may also face upset - as whether Dempsey is still in the running remains to be seen.

A release date as early as 2013 has been mooted, we'll keep you posted.

New Dark Knight Rises Set Pic Reveals Back Of Bane's Head

Alright, we're totally looking forward to seeing The Dark Knight Rises. But the incessant stream of leaked photos, videos, and random info has to… well, cease at some point, doesn't it?

In the latest image to be released/leaked from Christopher Nolan's set, we get to see the back of Tom Hardy's head.

Well, perhaps we're being a little cavalier. Forgive our Bat-fatigue. What we're actually getting a close look at is the whopping scar on villain Bane's neck. Looks like it had to hurt. According to reports, the spots around Tom Hardy's back and the scars on his shaven head also have something to do with the make-up process - though the tats are Hardy's own. (Twit-twoo. We do appreciate a bit of ink on a man.)

In other Dark Knight Rises news, Liam Neeson has been vaguer than vague about whether he was on set to film, or just pay a visit to his old Batman chums.

The actor told Showbiz Spy: "I can tell you nothing about Dark Knight Rises, seriously. I was on set for maybe an hour and a half and the director didn't tell me anything of what it's about. So I'm being very honest when I say I have no idea what's going to happen."

Very nicely avoiding the subject there, Liam. Well done.

Serkis Talks The Hobbit, Jackson And Erm… Gollum Juice

Since he was cast as doomed Hobbit Sméagol in Peter Jackson's Lord Of The Rings, Andy Serkis has gone from "who?" to hot Hollywood property - pretty impressive for a guy whose actual face barely appeared on screen.

It's fair to say though, that Serkis has had a huge impact on the way in which performance-capture technology is perceived by the industry and audiences alike. Gollum was never simply a CGI creation, but a bonafide character whose emotion and presence was felt just as keenly as that of any flesh and blood player in the epic trilogy. And since, Serkis has gone on to be nominated for countless awards for playing similarly created characters.

So returning to the role that made him must hold with it a bit of pressure for the actor...

"Gollum’s never really gone too far away from me because he’s indelibly kind of printed into my DNA now, I think," Serkis told the LA Times in a recent interview. "I’ll tell you what was weird is going back and playing a character that has been so sort of absorbed into public consciousness that you almost don’t feel like you own it anymore. And to sort of gather it back — I mean, I did feel, I think, probably in the first couple of days going back into it that I was sort of doing a weird impersonation of him rather than being him because there have been so many spoofs and people’s impersonations and so on, and some people’s impersonations are really great. And I’m kind of thinking, 'Oh gosh, that’s how to do it, yeah.' And you know, then you get back into it. … Meaningfully getting back into it was really exciting.

"For me, I’ve never drawn a distinction between live-action acting and performance-capture acting. It is purely a technology. It’s a bunch of cameras that can record the actor’s performance in a different way. In terms of animation, animators are actors as well. Performance capture is such a liberating tool. I am quite evangelical about it to other actors because I think it’s such a wonderful — it’s a magic suit you put on that allows you to play anything regardless of your size, your sex, your color, whatever you are. As long as you have the acting chops and the desire to get inside a character, you can play anything. so I long for it to be accepted by the acting profession so that it can proliferate."

One of the things that made Gollum so distinctive was his voice - will Serkis be able to recreate those tricksy tones?

"I think my vocal chords are so thrashed that I don’t really feel anything anymore there," mused the actor. "During Lord of the Rings, I used to have to drink tons of what we call Gollum juice, which was lemon and honey and ginger. And actually when I went back to do The Hobbit this time, to reprise the role, I did , probably kind of more romantically and sort of nostalgically, get people to whip up a few bowls of Gollum juice which I used to drink. But it doesn’t really hurt, to be honest, anymore."

Of course, the return to Middle Earth hasn't simply meant revisiting this character for Serkis. The continuation of his longtime collaboration with Jackson now means stepping in to the boss' chair as second unit director. And it seems the bromance between the pair isn't likely to end anytime soon...

"Peter’s just been the most phenomenal mentor, supporter, friend, collaborator. I cherish working with him so much, and this incredible journey that he’s sort of set me off on, really. Because I’m working on The Hobbit not only as Gollum, but I’m directing the second unit."

"I actually went down there for two weeks to reprise the role of Gollum, and I basically stayed for a year to direct the second unit. So that’s thrilling. I’m really, really enjoying that and getting a chance to work with him from another angle. I’m being his kind of eyes and years for the second unit, really. We’ve just been on location for two months shooting the most beautiful places in New Zealand. That’s been extraordinary. I love working with Pete, and everything that he’s created at WETA. The whole team, the whole outfit in New Zealand in Wellington, is a very, very special, wonderful place that I keep willingly returning to."

Being Human Returns February 5th

We brought you the season four trailer for the Beeb’s brilliant supernatural drama Being Human and now we can reveal the show is set to return February 5, at 9pm on BBC Three. Wahoo!

The premier episode, entitled “Eve of the war”, picks up following the gripping series three finale, with the gang returning to their home in Barry Island to deal with the aftermath. But the gang don’t have time to mourn for long - the Old Ones are coming.

Despite the show’s recent woes (departures of original characters Russell Tovey and Aidan Turner – sob!), series creator Toby Whithouse isn’t deterred, saying: “As ever, Being Human lives or dies on the strength of the characters and the cast, and that’s why I think this series is our strongest yet.

“Damien Molony joins the team as Hal. Hand on heart, I think he’s one of the most exciting and versatile actors of his generation. Watching his performance grow over the filming was a joy.

“Then there’s Michael Socha. Promoted from semi-regular to lead. If you thought he was good in series 3, wait till you see what he does in series 4. Michael will break your heart this year.

And he couldn’t fail to mention his leading lady and GG♥SF favourite Lenora Crichlow, who plays ghost Annie: “And of course beautiful Lenora. Our star. The heart of the show. This year she gives a truly breathtaking performance.”

Depicting the latest Batman merchandise at this year’s annual UK Toy Fair, the poster reveals a few new enhancing changes to Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman. And the giggle worthy headline in question: “New Photo Reveals What Makes The Dark Knight Rise.”

Wiseman “Close To Handing Over” Total Recall Cut.

It feels like just yesterday we watched the first, raw cuts from Len Wiseman’s upcoming re-boot, Total Recall. So we were surprised to hear he’s almost finished editing the first director’s cut.

“I'm very close to handing over my cut. It's going really well,” Wiseman told Coming Soon. "The combination of mystery and emotion and action, it's coming together. Colin [Farrell] is a large part of that and I'm really happy with him."

Despite suffering no difficulties in coaxing the best out of his leading man, it wasn’t always plain sailing: "I think the complexity of the dual stories was the most surprising and challenging thing.”

"When you see Total Recall, the [Paul] Verhoeven film, you experience it, it's finished. When you're involved in diving into the material again and going back into the Philip K. Dick story, you realise there is so much to be discussed about the dual stories.”

“There's the reality story and there's the fantasy element. They're running parallel together, so you always have to keep those two alive. That's the inherent nature of the concept and what makes the concept so cool,” Wiseman adds.

We’ve always thought so too, Len. If you’re not already au-fait with the premise, Total Recall revolves around the story of Doug Quaid/Hauser, a factory worker who suspects he may be a spy for one of the two nation states, Euromerica and New Shanghai – he’s just got to work out which.

Total Recall stars Colin Farrell as Doug Quaid, Bryan Cranston as Vilos Cohaggen, Jessica Biel as Melina and Kate Beckinsale as love interest, Lori.

New Avengers Images, Plus Spider-Man Spied On-Set?

Those lucky so-and-so’s over at Empire get to have all the fun. Unrestricted access to The Avengers set, actors and director, Joss Whedon? Man, we’d have been all over that!

If you, like us, are radio-active green with jealousy, take heart – you can read all the behind-screens action when Empire goes on sale on 26 January. However, if you can’t wait that long, feast your eyes on Empire’s upcoming combo of Avengers covers - plus a couple of exclusive photos taken from the film. We like.

In other Avengers news, Brit actress, Jenny Agutter, who plays a “female council member” in the movie, has let slip to the Radio Times that she was on set with Iron Man.. and Spider-Man..? Say what?! We’re not sure if this is a mistake from either Agutter or the Radio Times, but if not, this has to be one of the best kept secrets in recent Marvel movie history.

GG♥SF suspect it was the former though.

First Look: New Hunger Games Photos Released!

Continuing our mild interest - okay, spiralling obsession - with The Hunger Games, we immediately had to post the latest photos released online by Lionsgate today.

The new photos feature Jennifer Lawrence as tough-nut and heroine, Katniss Everdeen, the wonderfully cast Woody Harrelson as drunk mentor Haymitch and Elizabeth Banks as Capitol rep, Effie Trinket.

More excitingly, we get a glimpse at Stanley Tucci’s character, voice of the Hunger Games, Caesar Flickerman, in all his sparkling finery. Looking good Tucci.

The Hunger Games is directed by Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, Pleasantville) and goes on UK release 23 March 2012.

Merlin Creators Reveal Series 5 Plans

The legend BBC series Merlin is based upon might involve some right raunchy stuff, but according to Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy, we're unlikely to see all the incesty bits on the small screen.

Good job they've got Bradley James to keep us happy, isn't it.

Speaking to Sci-Fi Now, Capps said: "I’m not sure it would appeal to us. What’s great about Merlin is it has that sense of wonder and magic and I think to tell the real version of king Arthur and all it’s blood and incest is not something that would appeal to us.

"Game of Thrones is a little bit different in that it is a genuine fantasy, a more violent one than Merlin, we’re great admirers of it but it’s a totally different thing. What we’re trying to be is like a PG-13 Hollywood film and I don’t think we’ll ever take the program to a place that isn’t that."

The pair also revealed that, despite having only originally planned five series' for the show, this next won't necessarily be the last.

"At the time we were pitching the series and talking to Judy Gardener about it we thought that we want to be ambitious and do a five year plan, it doesn’t mean to say it will only last for five series, it was just how we conceived it at the time," said Capps.

"It was all about slow-burning all the character arcs and the legends and the mythology of the series so we didn’t do that thing that happens in British drama a lot, which is piling up the story and burning the character arc too quickly so it certainly doesn’t mean that Merlin will only run for five series."

More Merlin can only be a good thing in our book. Bring it on!

The Fass Talks X-Men: First Class Sequel

The prospect of seeing Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy reunite for a second X-Men movie literally has us salivating. So we're extremely excited to hear that The Fass is equally excited about revisiting the on-screen bromance.

In an interview with IFC, the actor discussed how their characters, Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr, might move forward, now that they're on opposite sides of the mutant cause.

"You know what’s interesting about Magneto and Professor X from the comic books as well, is there’s such a complexity to their relationship," Fassbender said.

"It’s not just like clear-cut enemies; they’re best friends as well. In the comic books, even after they’ve had this sort of rift, Professor X asks Magneto to come back and look after the students at certain points.

"I think there’s always that complexity in their relationship. And we want to keep that alive as possible, because that’s I think a really interesting thing — the conflict there.

"Hopefully we’ll get to do another one; that’s what we want to carry that vein through for sure," he added. "Personally, I do and I know James feels the same."

This is all very exciting. We need to go have a little lie down…

Dark Knight Rises Spoiler Revealed

We're sure Christopher Nolan will be thrilled to hear that Dark Knight Rises actress Joey King has been blabbing about what's in store for her character.

And the news may come as something of a shock to fans.

SPOILER WARNING: Go away now if you don't want to know stuff…

The 13-year-old has confirmed that she plays Ra's al Ghul's (Liam Neeson) daughter in the film.

Interesting, huh?

She told My Entertainment World: "I play young Talia al Ghul. I can’t give too much away because I promised Mr. Nolan I wouldn’t say anything. There are too many secrets about the character and the movie."

King also revealed that she has filmed scenes for the third Batman adventure in London and India.

Rumours had been circulating that the part would be played by Nolan favourite, Marion Cotillard, whose character has since been named as Wayne Enterprises board member Miranda Tate - though many fans believe this is a cover for an older version of Talia al Ghul.

King went on to enthuse about her time working on the film, saying: "It was so cool - I had an amazing time. I got to travel to places I'd never been to before. Christopher Nolan is so nice. So is Christian Bale. I just had the best time."

The Dark Knight Rises will be released on July 20 of this year.

Joshua Jackson "Concerned" About Fringe Future

Fringe actor Joshua 'Pacey' Jackson has spoken candidly about his concern for the future of top sci-fi drama Fringe, expressing particular worry that, should it be axed, the show wouldn't have the opportunity to go out on a high.

His comments follow Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly revelation that the series is losing money for the network.

Speaking to IGN, Jackson said: "I think Kevin was being pretty honest. If we're not making them money on Friday then that show is going to get cancelled. Whether it's Fringe or American Idol, when it stops making money, you know, it's show business."

"Whether [the show ends] this year, whether we get a half-season next year, whether we get a whole season next year, whether we run for ten more years, at the end of the day... what will be important is not how long it runs but if the whole story finishes. So I'm more concerned about the finish than anything else."

Jackson went on to reiterate his belief that Fringe's writing team deserve the time to give the show a real ending.

"I just want to take Kevin Reilly's word that if they are going to end it this year, that they give the guys enough of a heads-up [to] get that whole endgame out," he said.

"Because at this point, the most important thing to me - and this is so maudlin - but the most important thing to me about Fringe is that it finishes properly. Because you can't bring people along a journey like that for all those years and then just cut it off. It sucks.

"That would really bum me out at the end of what's been a pretty cool experience, to not have the finish."

It'd bum us out too, Josh, but if you need comforting, you know where to find us…

Snow White And The Huntsman: New Trailer Released

This year is set to offer us two takes on German fairy tale, Snow White. And so far, Rupert Sanders' version is definitely the more interesting as far as we're concerned.

A new sneak peek for the movie has now landed, which gives us a better look at Charlize Theron's evil queen but doesn't show much more of either of the film's titular leads, Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth.

Snow White And The Hunstman is released in the UK on 1 June 2012.

Lots Of The Amazing Spider-Man Details Revealed

The Amazing Spider-Man isn't due to hit screens until July, but stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone have already begun their press tour. K-blimey.

But the good news is, it means they're busy revealing all kinds of juicy gossip about the movie, which in our book is a definite win.

The first stop on the tour, saw the stars join producers Avi Arad and Matthew Tolmach in Tokyo to answer questions from a gaggle of journalists.

We've posted the video below, but there's lots of back and forth via translators, so here's the best bits:

"After three movies we finally got the opportunity to tell what really started Peter Parker on his journey: the fact that he lost his parents. He doesn’t know what happened to them, no-one talks about it," said Arad.

"So we found a very, very good story about the true origin of what makes a human being, what sets their destiny. Then we got to Gwen Stacy. Not only a great love interest but actually a real intellectual friend, a real intellectual competition, a strong woman who represents our world today and our our world tomorrow.

"This movie is driven from the Spider-man, Peter Parker point of view. It’s not like taking a picture and getting bitten by a spider. Peter is on a quest and it makes for an unusual movie in which peter carves his own destiny by looking for answers. When Peter Parker gets his powers all it does is enhance his physical ability because his heart was always the heart of a hero."

Arad went on to discuss Rhys Ifans' character, Curt Connors (aka the Lizard), and the role he will play in the film, explaining: "We introduce our villain, Doctor Connors, and in the great tradition of Marvel, Doctor Connors is going to be connected to Peter Parker and in our case, even more interesting, into Gwen Stacy. Right there, the challenge to deal with a villain that is also a mentor. The only one you can look at and say 'What really happened to my Dad?' That’s a very hard person to fight."

Andrew Garfield, meanwhile, discussed the physical demands of bringing Spidey to life on the big screen: "A lot of the stunts are practical and grounded in reality. That was something Marc, the director really wanted to make sure happened in this movie to set it apart for the previous ones, and in so doing he hired an incredible stunt team.

"I had about four months of training with them before we started doing any shooting, where I would exhaust myself every day and get into near-death experiences on the hour, every hour. It was fantastic and terribly challenging."

And finally, Emma Stone refused to reveal whether the film would replicate the iconic upside-down kiss between Peter and MJ from Sam Raimi's first Spider-Man film, saying: "You don’t want to know! You want to watch the movie and find out. And, it would be weird if we were like 'There’s something iconic coming up.'

"You’ve got to decide if it’s iconic or not. But there is a nice first kiss, I will say that, and it’s different to the upside down one… and we liked it."

We're guessing that what she means, is no.

John Simm To Return To Doctor Who? Yes Please!

We don't know about you, but GG♥SF LOVED John Simm's maniacal portrayal of the Master during David Tennant's Doctor Who tenure. So we'd be proper chuffed to see him return.

And, by the sounds of it, Mr Simm wouldn't be opposed to reprising the role.

The actor was asked recently on Twitter whether he would return as the Master in Doctor Who, and responded: "Of course! Mr Moffat is a brilliant writer."

And he also had a message for Twitter abusers who weren’t so keen on his portrayal: "For those grown ups ANGRY about how the Master was written/portrayed… please don’t tell me, tell someone who gives a f**k. Therapist!? … or (to avoid confusion) perhaps a psychiatrist? That’s cleared that up!"

'Nuff said, really.

For what it's worth, we would love to see Simm return. If you're listening, Steven Moffat, please make this happen. Pretty please?

The Dark Knight Rises: 'The Bat' Revealed

"Riddle me this, riddle me that, who's afraid of the big, black bat?"

Batman Forever might not be the best Batman movie of all time, but this Riddler quote came bubbling to the surface of our brains when we heard the name for the Dark Knight's new flying vehicle The Bat, more traditionally know as the Batwing.

We first spotted playboy Bruce Wayne's shiny new vehicle courtesy of a few sneaky set pics last year, and it's presence in the movie was confirmed in the theatrical trailer.

But, thanks to a FCC filing by toy manufacturer Hot Wheels, we're finally getting a closer look at the machine, which will of course be available to purchase around the time of the movie's release (though it probably won't fly, sorry), along with a version of the Bat-Pod and the tank-like Tumbler.

Anyway, here it is (courtesy of Wireless Goodness). Not particularly scary, is it?

First Look! Resident Evil: Retribution

Badass girls, big guns, and a bit of action ticks all our boxes when it comes to big budget sci-fi silliness. And it looks like that's exactly what Resident Evil: Retribution is going to provide.

The teaser trailer for the film, released today, sees Milla Jovovitch reprise the role of Alice, who continues her fight against the Umbrella Corporation to the tune of Daft Punk's Recognizer from the Tron Legacy soundtrack.

In a recent interview with Digital Spy, Jovovitch revealed the film will see her character go on a "bigger, more exciting adventure".

"It's an incredible script," the actress added. "Paul did such a great job and we're going to see some great new characters from the games and characters that we've loved from other films coming back."

Meanwhile, director Paul WS Anderson promised: "It's going to be a real globetrotting affair. There'll be spectacular action, scary stuff and the return of some of the franchise's favourite actors."

Resident Evil: Retribution will open in cinemas on September 14, 2012.

Liv Tyler Signs For The Side Effect

Lord Of The Rings and Super star Liv Tyler is set to make a return to sci-fi in Ti West's new project, The Side Effect.

The actress (who we at GG♥SF love, incidentally) will play Catherine Rigby a woman who is involved in an experimental space programme that finds her spending several months alone in space as research for a pharmaceutical company.

But whilst alone in space, she suffers from a strange and inexplicable side effect (aha!) - pregnancy.

"The role of Rigby is a fantastic character within a great thriller and I am looking forward to sinking my teeth into the part," Tyler told Deadline, adding that she was excited to work with "super-talented exciting young filmmaker" West.

Cabin Fever 2 director Ti added: "Although it is still somewhat of a horror film, it is much more psychological than any of my previous efforts, It was essential that I find an actress who could portray a wide range of emotion and always earn the audience’s sympathy no matter what the situation. As soon as I sat down with Liv, it was obvious she was the one."

No release date has yet been set for the film.

Avengers: Black Widow Fight Scene Details Leaked?

You all know how excited we are about Joss 'The Great' Whedon's The Avengers hitting the big screen, so we're not going to wax lyrical about it.

BUT, some interesting details about the film have - possibly - come to light, and we couldn't resist sharing them.

Our buddies at Bleeding Cool spotted an intriguing forum post on Superherohype that indicates Black Widow (played by the eternally sexy Scarlett Johansson) will be, in great Whedon tradition, kicking some ass.

SPOILER WARNING: The following hasn't been verified, but it could be a spoiler, so don't read it if you don't want to be spoiled.

Here's what forumer Dekard66 had to say:

"I wanted to share some interesting things I found out at work today on the Avengers. I work for a pretty big toy company (not Hasbro) and we have the Marvel license. One of my co-workers just got back from a trip from Asia for the toy fair there. Marvel and Disney presented whole scenes and then some clips. Here is what he told me as best as I can remember.

"He described a scene with Black Widow in here black party dress from the first trailer and she is being held by some Russian thugs. (she’s on a mission) She is tied to a chair and the main guy is slapping her in the face and talking smack to he. He mocks her and she is not intimidated and say’s some cool stuff back. my friend said that there is classic Whedon dialog and it is quite funny. It gets better because her cell phone rings and another thug standing off to the side answers it and is asked to give the phone to her. He does so hesitantly and on the other end of the phone is agent Coulson!

"I cant remember the specifics, but the exchange is really funny as she’s tells him she’s busy and he is saying Fury needs her back pronto. She tell him something like, “hold on a minute” and then the proceeds to kick the guys asses while still tied to the chair! She eventually breaks free by landing the chair on a guy and it breaks, then she finishes them off. After she is done she walks over to the phone and tells Coulson that she’s done or some thing."

Pretty amazing, non? We don't just love Natasha Romanoff, we want to be her.

Dekard66 also had this intriguing little titbit for us:

"SPOILER ALERT!! The Hellicarrier starts out on the water like a regular aircraft carrier and then the outside fins begin to rotate and then the anti-gravity/turbines fire up and then it slowly rises out the water and begins flying away. The People in attendance, he said were clapping. He definitely said he nerded out at that moment too.

"Then they started showing some more scenes/clips and the one that stood out the most is CAP pointing and then yelling to the Hulk "Hulk Smash!" Hulk proceeds to start rampaging forward and runs straight into a building. Right through the outside wall!! Then it shows him running past some office people that were freaking out as Hulk runs by them like a bull in a China shop. He said it was intense and funny at the same time. Can you believe it? CAP giving Hulk orders to SMASH! LOVE IT! Oh, and the Marvel rep told them that Hulk is smart or conscious of what he is doing more so that the other movies."

In our humble opinion, it all sounds bloody brilliant. We KNEW trusting in Whedon was the right decision.

The Avengers opens in the UK on 27 April 2012, and hits cinemas in the States on 4 May.

Beckinsale Says Total Recall Remake Is "Different"

Total Recall have been seen on the big screen before, but star Kate Beckinsale has claimed that the new movie is "very different" from the original starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

In an interview with USA Today, the actress confirmed that the movie will retain inspiration from the 1990 film, and We Can Remember It For You Wholesale, the Philip K Dick story it is based upon, but will also establish itself as a film in it's own right.

"It's a very different take on it. It's still re-imagining the future. The question of 'Is this real? Who am I?' is the same," said Kate, who plays opposite Colin Farrell's Quaid as his wife, Lori.

"I'm a villain, which is new. That was really great. There's a nicely slightly psychotic vibe to her, which is really fun. Len [Wiseman, the film's director and Kate's husband] was writing my part with me in mind, which I was kind of insulted about."

Sony this week released an official synopsis for the film, which indicates that we won't see Quaid make his way to Mars:

"Total Recall is an action thriller about reality and memory, inspired anew by the famous short story We Can Remember It For You Wholesale by Philip K Dick. Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories.

For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he’s got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life – real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man.

Finding himself on the run from the police – controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston), the leader of the free world – Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) to find the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate."

Total Recall - which also stars Jessica Biel and Bill Nighy - opens on August 3 in US cinemas and on August 22 in the UK.

The Fass Talks Prometheus

Sigh. Isn't Michael Fassbender just the dreamiest dreamboat ever? And have you seen Shame? WOW.

Anyway, apologies - there is a point to this post. The Fass, as he's affectionately known here at GG♥SF HQ, has been talking Prometheus (before you ask - no, we don't think he gets his kit off. And yes, we are disappointed about it).

In an interview with InStyle, the actor confirmed that he plays a humanoid android (try saying that five times fast) in Ridley Scott's upcoming Alien… whatever it is.

"The first thing that struck me was a good script," he said.

"Really intelligent script. A real thriller. Real anticipation. The first Alien had that. The atmosphere was thick. You knew that something was going to happen. Which is very rare that you can read that in a script."

And speaking of Mr Scott, Fassbender was positively gushy about the director, saying: "He’s amazing. Really something else to watch him work. His attention to detail. And also his mischievousness, his playfulness. And again, no idea is stupid for him. He’ll let you bring it to the floor and have a go at it. I really, really enjoyed working with him. And of course the cast."

Prometheus hits cinemas this June.

Moffat Promises Big Things For Doctor Who Anniversary

2012 might have only just begun, but here at GG♥SF HQ we're already gearing up for an amazing 2013. The reason, you ask? It's only the year that marks the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who. What geek wouldn't be excited?

So we're mighty pleased to hear Steven Moffat promise it's going to be good - speaking both as the show's big boss, but also a fan.

"There will never be a better time, I promise you," The Moff told the Radio Times.

"I'm saying this as a Doctor Who fan myself, and knowing a certain amount about what's coming.

"For so many reasons I can't talk about yet, there will never be a better time to be a Doctor Who fan, I absolutely promise that."

Doctor Who star Matt Smith has admitted that he would like to film a special 3D episode, and also expressed his desire to appear alongside former Who stars such as Tom Baker, Paul McGann, Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant (something, incidentally, we would also LOVE to see).

Doctor Who is expected to return to screens this autumn for a 14 episode run.

The Cumberbatch Talks Star Trek 2

We all know that Benedict Cumberbatch is set to play the villain in J.J Abrams' upcoming Star Trek sequel, right?

Well, actually, we could possibly be wrong.

Speaking to MTV at the Golden Globes this weekend, the actor revealed that we may have been barking up the wrong tree.

"I don't think we do know that, actually," Cumberbatch told MTV's Josh Horowitz when asked if his "Star Trek" role is a villainous one. "That's just supposition. And that's all I'm going to say about it."

Cumberbatch did reveal that he's been preparing for his role by consulting friends and family members better versed in the Star Trek universe than he is.

"I started slowly, but quite genuinely, when he rebooted it with this last film," he said. "I have lots of friends and family, all sorts of people who've loved all of the series and all of the films. I've been introduced to it through them and now I'm going back to them and asking them questions so I can get up to speed with true Trekkies."

Cumberbatch also said he's been "working out nonstop," indicating that his part in Star Trek 2 is a very physical one, and claimed that he's having a blast getting ready for the role.

"Abrams has great ideas. It's been great fun to prep. I start next week, which is really exciting, and I can't say any more than that."

Paramount Pictures announced today that principal photography has begun in Los Angeles on the untitled follow-up to the 2009 movie.

Star Trek 2 is scheduled for release on May 17, 2013.

New Hobbit Image Gives Us A Good Look At Bilbo

We always knew Martin Freeman was good, but this weekend's emotional Sherlock finale proved just how good he is, making us even more excited to see his performance in The Hobbit at the end of the year.

A new image from the film has been released, showing Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, looking a bit rough around the edges and clasping his trusty sword, Sting.

There's no news on which part of the movie this still is taken from, but we reckon it could be the bit where Bilbo rescues Thorin's company of dwarves from the clutches of a bunch of evil, oversized spiders.

Sneak Peek! Noomi Rapace In Prometheus

Blimey, that Ridley Scott knows how to milk a promotional campaign.

The director has released another new image from Prometheus, this time giving us a glimpse at Noomi Rapace's character Elizabeth Shaw, and what appears to be a Space Jockey lurking behind her.

Creepy.

In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, writer Damon Lindelof revealed: "The movie is definitely epic in its scope. One of the filmmakers that we ended up talking about to a fair degree of redundancy was David Lean, who directed Lawrence of Arabia.

"We wanted to make the movie feel big by having the characters be small in big spaces. That connected to the larger themes we were talking about - that we're all just these little gnats crawling around on our little planet."

Prometheus opens in cinemas in June 2012.

MAJOR Buffy Season 9 Spoiler!

We've been there, done that, and - we're not ashamed to admit - bought the bloody t-shirt.

Since Sunnydale collapsed into the Hellmouth, the Buffster's been through some fairly hair-raising situations. Giant, half-horse sisters, lesbianism, sex in space… We reckon it's fair to say that Whedon, or rather writer Andrew Chambliss, has pushed a few boundaries.

But issue five of season nine sees him take it a huge step further.

Buff is up the duff.

Yeah.

The final page of the issue sees Summers clutching a positive pregnancy test.

But who's the daddy?

Could it be true love Angel, or old flame Spike? The result of a tryst with Xander, or mysterious new character Heinrich? Or is there some good old-fashioned hocus pocus going on?

We'll have to wait to find out, but damn, that's one hell of a cliffhanger…

Whedon Confirms Cap Will Lead The Avengers

Joss 'The Great' Whedon (all hail, all hail, etc, etc) has confirmed that, while The Avengers is very much an ensemble movie, it will be Captain America's point of view that leads us through the film.

Whedon's decision is, of course, in-keeping with the movie's comic book inspiration, as it is Cap who leads the superhero team-up.

But the decision to maintain Steve Rogers' leadership is no coincidence. The movie will follow on directly from the ending of Captain America: The First Avenger, which saw Chris Evans' character wake in the modern day, after spending several decades on ice.

“So much of [The Avengers] story takes place from Steve Rogers’ perspective, since he’s the guy who just woke up and sees this weird-ass world,” Whedon told Entertainment Weekly. “Everyone else has been living in it. He’s the guy that feels that sense of loss.

“The Avengers is very much about people who are alone — because I’m writing it. Captain America is kind of the ultimate loner in that way. There is an anachronism to him, and Chris and I have always tried to make it, without making it goofy or too obvious, always tried to make him that same grounded ’40s Steve Rogers he was in the other movie.”

But Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) fans need not fear - each hero will get equal screen time.

“You get them in a world, the world of S.H.I.E.L.D., where they fit in. And you say, upfront, these are monsters. These are freaks. These are not you and me, and what are they doing here? How are they human beings?” Whedon added. “Let’s just investigate that.”

The Avengers comes to UK screens on 27 April, 2012.

Sneak Peek! Dan Radcliffe In The Woman In Black

Green Arrow For TV Adaptation, Smallville's Hartley Not Involved, GG♥SF Gutted

There's nothing we like more at GG♥SF than a buffed-up, blonde beauty, and Smallville's incarnation of DC's famous Emerald Archer satisfied our requirements perfectly.

But sadly, we won't be seeing Justin Hartley return to the small screen in his skintight leather outfit in the near future.

The CW is rumoured to be developing a series around millionaire Oliver Queen and his adventures as protector of Star City.

Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim, who collaborated on 2011's Green Lantern movie, are working on this new take on Green Arrow (along with Fringe's Andrew Kreisberg) — but the adaptation will sadly have nothing to do with the delicious version of Queen that appeared on 70-some-odd episodes of Smallville, meaning Hartley (who also tried his hand at Aquaman in failed TV pilot Mercy Reef) won't appear.

Boo.

New Chronicle Trailer Released

In a world where cinemas are saturated by superheroes who save the world, it's going to be refreshing to see Josh Trank's dark take on the genre when Chronicle comes out in February.

The latest trailer for the low-budget flick about a group of teenagers who discover powers but turn to practical jokes over saving humanity, has definitely piqued our interest.

According to Trank, “Superpowers in our movie are a way to express a teenage drama. It’s a movie about inner conflict and personal problems, not good versus evil."

An exciting prospect indeed. Could Chronicle be about to completely reinvent the genre as we know it?

The Dark Knight Rises: Bale's New Batsuit Revealed

The latest issue of Entertainment Weekly certainly has a treat in store. Not only is Christian Bale splashed all over the cover - but he's sporting his new Batsuit for The Dark Knight Rises.

Yum.

The magazine has confirmed that Christopher Nolan's upcoming Bat-finale will see the return of Wayne Manor, and with it, the Batcave.

Storyline-wise - and look away now if you don't want to read even the mildest of spoilers - it appears that the film will deal with the consequences of the ending of The Dark Knight, in which Batman sacrificed his own reputation to maintain Gotham's picture of Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) - aka Two-Face - as the city's hero. To that end, we'll see Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and Bruce Wayne work to cover up his wrongdoings.

Meanwhile, Bale revealed that he felt under immense pressure undertaking the iconic role, telling the magazine: "I can tell you the truth because I'm done with it: I felt immense pressure. And I think it's a good pressure, because you owe it to the films - and the people's expectations - to make great work."

And Nolan addressed critics regarding complaints that villain Bane's (Tom Hardy) voice was incomprehensible in the recently released prologue, saying: "I think when people see the film things will come into focus. Bane is very complex and very interesting and when people see the finished film, people will be very entertained by him".

Hmm… a little vague, don't you think?

Tom Hiddleston Talks Loki In The Avengers

Thor villain Loki is set to change "entirely" in Joss 'The Great' Whedon's upcoming superhero epic, The Avengers.

In an interview with Digital Spy, actor and Orange BAFTA Rising Star award nominee Tom Hiddleston revealed: "We haven't thrown out the baby with the bathwater, we've retained the kernel of his origins - he's a damaged, troubled soul who feels like he has no place in the universe.

"There's certainly a terrible and complex animosity towards his brother, Thor, and towards his surrogate family in Odin and the whole of Asgard.

"Loki in The Avengers is someone who's evolved from that. He's fully self-possessed in his mischief making and I think a lot more menacing."

Nic Hoult Zombified, But Still Sexy

WOW Nicholas Hoult's come a long way since he played the annoying kid in About A Boy.

His next on-screen outing will see the X-Men: First Class actor play a romantic teen hero, who's uh… well, dead.

But, as the first image released from the Jonathan Levine-directed movie Warm Bodies shows, zombies can still be sexy.

Being touted by many as Twilight meets The Walking Dead, we remain assured that the film will have more to it than angst, angst and more angst. As the blurb puts it: "Warm Bodies is a story about a boy who loves a girl… for more than just her body."

A refreshing change, if you ask us.

"By any standards, Nicholas is pretty fantastic," says Levine. "He's definitely the Brad Pitt of the zombie world. We wanted to stay true to the zombie tradition and yet make a believable romantic interest."

Well, Sir, congratulations - you certainly managed it. Feast your eyes on the below. It's enough to make us buy a ticket...

Goldman Talks X-Men: First Class Sequel

We don't need to wax lyrical any more about how much we LOVED X-Men: First Class (or the swoonsome Yummy McAvoy / The Fass partnership, for that matter). Suffice to say, the film was a hit - with GG♥SF, the wider geek community - oh, and THE WORLD.

Anyway, it'll be no surprise to hear that Jane Goldman's latest chatter about the film's sequel is sending excited shivers down our collective spine.

Both Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy have spoken openly about wanting to return to their respective roles as Magneto and Professor X, and it seems Goldman is just as enthusiastic.

"James and Michael brought so much to them that I think it's entirely natural to be talking about where those characters would go next," she told MTV. "It was inherent in their stories and their arcs. There are so many interesting places to go."

But that's not to say the sequel's a done deal. From the writer's point of view, it all very much depends on whether frequent collaborator, director Matthew Vaughn signs up for a second round.

"In terms of what's going on with that, again from my point of view, it's down to what Matthew decides to do," she said. "If he decides he wants to direct the next one and if he wants me on board, I'm 100 percent there."

So if you're listening, Mr Vaughn, sign the bloody contract - NOW!

Star Wars TV Series: Details Revealed

We remain resolutely on the fence when it comes to George Lucas' plans for a Star Wars TV series. But that's not to say we're not intrigued by the working title for the show, which was revealed today.

Star Wars: Underworld.

Intriguing, eh?

In an interview with IGN, producer Rick McCallum confirmed that the project is going ahead, and that the live action series will bridge the gap between Revenge Of The Sith and A New Hope.

"The scripts take place between episodes III and IV," McCallum added. "It's that twenty-year period when Luke is growing up. It's not about Luke, but it's about that period when the Empire is really trying to take things forward. It's called Underworld - that's the working title - and it's underneath what's going on: the criminals and the gangs that are running everything."

He also revealed that 50 hour-long "complex and dark and adult" episodes for the show have already been penned, saying: "Each one hour episode is bigger than any of the prequels were."

Predictably, the show is currently stuck in what those in the biz call 'development hell', largely due to budget restrictions.

Hmm… looks like we'll be waiting for this one a little while longer. Watch the full interview below.

Millar Resurrects Rumours Of A Kick-Ass Sequel

Yesterday, GG♥SF's hopes of seeing our favourite wetsuit-clad superhero return to the silver screen had been kicked to the curb, following Jane Goldman's denial that she and director Matthew Vaughn are involved in the project.

But Mark Millar has since reassured fans that hapless Dave Lizewski will make a comeback.

When fan Aaron Lewis posed the question: "What will happen with Kick-Ass 2 without Matthew or Jane?" on Twitter, the comic book scribe responded: "Matthew will be producing Kick-Ass 2."

Millar also confirmed that Vaughn is in talks with an as-yet unnamed filmmaker to write and direct the movie, saying: "He's drafted in someone very, very cool."

But who, Mr Millar? WHO?!

There's no word yet on whether, if the movie did materialise, original lead Aaron Johnson would return. But Chloe Moretz, who played Hit-Girl, did hint that she'd be up for a sequel during a Q&A at Empire Big Screen back in August.

Here's hoping.

As children of the 80s, Jim Henson's weird but so wonderful fantasy adventure has huge nostalgia for us, so this latest news has completely filled us with joy.

Labyrinth is getting a prequel - in comic book form.

Oh, yes.

The announcement comes in a timely fashion, considering Bowie turned 65 this past weekend, but is nonetheless welcome.

Comic publisher Archaia revealed that the new "tragic" story will be set before the events of the 1986 film directed by Muppets creator Jim Henson, but will be "true to the spirit of the original", which also starred Jennifer Connelly.

Editor-in-chief Stephen Christy told Entertainment Weekly: "We can say it's a prequel. It's the story of how Jareth is brought into the Labyrinth for the first time. So, it doesn't deal with Sarah, it doesn't deal with Toby or anything like that.

"It's a very tragic story that is the opposite of Sarah's, which has triumph at the end. It's a prequel, so we know what happens in the movie."

Christy confirmed that illustrator Brian Froud, who worked on Labyrinth and 1982 Henson movie The Dark Crystal, will helm "all the character designs and all the covers and conceptualising and everything," and added: "I want to do songs where they're songs being sung [by characters] and we show the notes on the page, so you can actually play along.

"The budget to get Bowie to do one song would be the budget of all the books, but we're talking to him to at least get his blessing or maybe an introduction or something... He also has likeness approval."

The book is slated for a late 2012 release. Bloody BRILLIANT!

Kick-Ass 2 Kicked To The Curb?

After the success of Matthew’s Vaughn’s adaptation of Mark Millar’s graphic novel, Kick-Ass, fan-boys and girls have been waiting on tenterhooks for news of a sequel. And unfortunately the news ain’t looking good folks - if Kick-Ass scribe Jane Goldman’s remarks are anything to go by.

Whilst promoting her latest screenplay for Woman in Black, starring Daniel Radcliff, Goldman found time to talk Kick-Ass with MTV News.

On whether or not the project would be going forward with Vaughn at the helm, she said: "I think the only thing that is fairly sure is that right now, Matthew doesn't have any plans to direct it. He and I are not currently talking about writing it either.”

“It may well be that Matthew oversees (Kick-Ass 2) in a producer role, and I may also be involved in that capacity. I know that there is somebody that Matthew has been talking to who would be interested in writing and directing that. That would be cool."

When asked if she thought Kick-Ass actually needed a follow-up movie, Goldman was more non-committal: "My own feeling is that I love Mark Millar's follow-up to the comic. I love the second volume of the comic, but whether the movie itself needs a sequel, I'm a little on the fence about that."

Hm. We hate to say it (and be the bearers of bad news), but overall the future for Kick-Ass 2, with the same production team, isn’t looking bright.

First Look! Being Human Series 4 Pics & Prequel Released

The fourth series of Being Human brings with it anticipation and trepidation in equal measure.

Much as we're excited to see the show return, we can't quite get past the idea of it continuing without our beloved Mitchell (Aidan Turner), George (Russell Tovey) and Nina (Sinead Keenan).

But creator Toby Whithouse has urged us to have hope, reassuring us that the departure of three major cast members could even make the series stronger. He insisted that Being Human has "never been in ruder health", and praised new series regulars Michael Socha (Tom) and Damien Molony (Hal).

"Not only would it be our first series without Aidan, but Russell had decided that series 4 would be his last, and Sinead had decided that her Being Human journey had come to an end after series 3," explained the writer on his BBC blog. "The mountain before us seemed even higher than usual.

"But once we'd stopped rocking and shaking, we saw series 4 as an opportunity: we could invent new characters, expand the show in different directions, create new worlds and monsters and heroes, and add new layers to the overarching Being Human mythology."

"Hand on heart, I think Damien is one of the most exciting and versatile actors of his generation. Watching his performance grow over the filming was a joy."

He continued: "Then there's Michael Socha. Promoted from semi-regular to lead. If you thought he was good in series 3, wait till you see what he does in series 4. Michael will break your heart this year.

"And of course beautiful Lenora. Our star. The heart of the show. This year she gives a truly breathtaking performance. One of my favourite moments of 2011 was the first full screening of episode two, when she left us all with our jaws on our chests."

One thing's for sure, it's going to be dark.

JJ Abrams Claims Cumberbatch Is A "Genius"

We'll be honest, whenever Benedict Cumberbatch's name is mentioned at GG♥SF HQ, it's followed up by some kind of tenuous innuendo along the lines of: "Benedict? He can Cumberbatch me anytime… arf, arf".

But it's not just his quirky charm that has us swooning (ok, perving - same difference). We very much recognise his impressive acting talent, too.

And we're not the only ones. The man behind Lost, Fringe, Super 8 and, of course, Star Trek, has gone on record to say the Sherlock star, who will be playing an as yet unnamed villain in the sci-fi follow up, is a "genius".

"We just were looking for someone with the most awesome name in history," Abrams joked to Collider. "That was the casting call. We asked for someone with the most awesome name in history, ever, and Benedict Cumberbatch showed up, so we were like, 'You're cast!'

"He's a genius," Abrams continued. "Honestly, he's just an incredible actor. If you've seen his work in Sherlock, he's just got incredible skills.

"I just loved his work and thought that he was perfect for what we needed," he added. "We were just very lucky."

Cumberbatch fever is catching, people.

In news that has us somewhat less enthused, Abrams also revealed that Star Trek 2 will be converted to 3D in post production, saying: "It will be converted, for those who want to see it in 3D, but I wanted to match the look of the first one and shoot it anamorphically."

Why Abrams? WHY?!

Cumberbatch and Clarke Confirmed for Star Trek Sequel

With filming due to commence on the new Star Trek movie, two hot British actors have been announced to star in J.J. Abrams’ upcoming sequel – Sherlock’s deliciously quirky leading man Benedict Cumberbatch and Doctor Who veteran and film director/writer, Noel Clarke.

We so approve.

Deadline.com recently reported that Cumberbatch had been cast as a leading character, but no further detail has yet been revealed. Variety broke the story about Noel’s involvement and is similarly scant on details. All we’ve been able to glean so far is that his character will be family man, with a wife and child.

Twitter kicked into a Noel Clarke frenzy upon hearing the news, with Clarke tweeting back: “Well I guess the cat is out of the bag.. don't say i can't keep secrets, i never said a word..."

With Chris Pine (James T. Kirk), Simon Pegg (Scotty), Karl Urban (Bones), Zacary Quinto (Spock) and Anton Yelchin (Chekov) all signed up to reprise their roles, the addition of Cumberbatch and Clarke has only served to whet our already healthy appetites.

Star Trek is due for general release May 2013.

Bradley Cooper For Man Of Steel? Yes Please

Be still our beating hearts. Rumour has it that the rather delectable Bradley Cooper could feature as Lex Luther in Zack Snyder’s upcoming reboot of the Superman franchise.

According to the chaps over at comicbooknews.com, they were sent a tip speculating that because production had been halted on Paradise Lost, Bradley Cooper was now free and willing to star as evil genius Lex.

The rumour has not been substantiated by Warner Bros, so for now we’ll have to take it with a pinch of salt. But we can totally see Cooper in the role. Currently, no official plot synopsis has been released, so we have no idea if Lex Luther will even feature in the movie – but it’s hard to picture Superman without his biggest and fiercest nemesis.

Superman: Man of Steel stars Brit, Henry Cavill as bespectacled Clark Kent, Michael Shannon will play badass, General Zod and the marvellous Amy Adams as Lois Lane. We are beyond happy Kate Bosworth is not returning. Worst Lois Lane ever. EVER.

Superman: Man of Steel is due for release in June 2013.

First Look: Jemaine Clement In Men In Black 3

Hells bells! The first photos of Jemaine Clement’s (Flight of the Concords) mysterious baddie in Men In Black 3 have been released online and he’s gone all easy rider on us.

Sporting a bushy beard, Hells Angels get up and rocking a seriously bitchin’ extra-terrestrial motorcycle, Clement is playing an alien in disguise.

Details about Clement’s character have been scant, but he recently told about.com: “I am an alien with prosthetics and I look hideous. But it's funny, there is a lot of action.”

“I'm 90 per cent evil in real life," Clement said, "It's hard to be nice most of the time when I'm only 10 percent good." We don’t believe it for the second.

Forget Twilight, Game of Thrones and that Potter thing, The Hunger Games has long been our new book-to-screen obsession, and as the release date looms ever closer, we're more and more excited to see the violent, dystopian tale played out.

The latest pictures, released today, give us a better look at Jennifer Lawrence as teen archery expert Katniss Everdeen, as well as Woody Harrelson as drunk guide Haymitch, Josh Hutcherson as Katniss's friend and competitor Peeta, Lenny Kravitz as stylist Cinna and Elizabeth Banks as Capitol rep Effie Trinket.

It's all extremely exciting.

The Hunger Games opens in the UK on 23 March 2012.

Ruffalo Reveals Avengers "Message" PLUS New Poster Released

We hate to say it, but sometimes even our favourite sci-fi and fantasy peeps can get a bit pretentious and… well, wanky, about their 'art'.

Which is exactly what Avengers star Mark Ruffalo has done, by speaking about the upcoming superhero spectacular as if it's a serious movie.

Don't get us wrong, we're pleased he's serious about the thing, but why did he have to go and suck all the fun out of it?

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Ruffalo got all deep and meaningful, saying: "You have all these disparate egos, superheroes in this and that, and they refuse to give up some of their positions in order to make a more perfect union and to join the team. That’s really what the whole movie is about: subjugating your own best interest momentarily to further that of the whole.

"These movies reach a lot of people, they’re our modern mythology. I think a lot of the beliefs I have and cherish were fostered by the decency of our superheroes, and what they were about and what they were fighting for."

For our part, we're mostly looking forward to good old fisticuffs, an explosion or two, some amazing CGI and a few LOLs provided by The Great Whedon. But whatevs.

Besides, this shiny new poster doesn't exactly intimate such hidden meanings, does it?

Sneak Peek! BtVS' Anya's Back In Once Upon A Time!

We heart BtVS vengeance demon Anya so much, Geeky Girl Anna even inherited her nickname - Spanyanka - in tribute to her. So we're proper pleased to see Emma Caulfield appear on screens again in an upcoming episode of Once Upon A Time (not that we can watch it in the UK yet… grumble, grumble).

The actress guest stars as The Blind Witch in ABC's fairytale-inspired series, from whom the Evil Queen challenges Hansel and Gretel to steal something.

And there's a geek bonus here as Caulfield's appearance sort of reunites her with Buffy writer Jane Espenson, who penned the episode Desperate Souls. Alright, it's tenuous, but we do love to see our favourite Buffy folk working together again.

The Once Upon A Time episode True North airs on ABC on Sunday 15 January.

First Look! Lee & Boultwood's Baker Street Irregulars Times Special

In December, a very special early Christmas present arrived in our inbox, courtesy of our friends Tony Lee and Dan Boultwood.

The generous chaps sent us their finished one page Baker Street Irregulars story, created specially for The Times newspaper. Fancy, eh?

And now they've gone one better and allowed us to share it with you people (we had to promise kisses in exchange, but we're not above making the most of our feminine wiles for an exclusive - you can thank us later).

The Adventure of the New Year's Necklace sees the return of Wiggins, Pockets, Eliza, Chen, Tiny, Ash and Fluffy the dog on New Year's day, 1892, and - of course - there's a mystery to be solved.

As we've come to expect from the boys, it's a story that's beautifully illustrated and wonderfully told. We loved it - not least because it's stuff like this, printed in the Funday Times, that first introduced us to the wonderful world of comics. Fingers crossed it'll lead to a second season for the young scamps... by which we mean Tony and Dan, not the Irregulars - they can take care of themselves.

The 12 Things We're Most Excited About In 2012

As years go, 2012 is one that holds a lot of promise for the Geeky Girls. From conventions aplenty to loads of good telly and more movies than we can count, we reckon it's going to be a good year.

But there's almost too much goodness for us to handle, so e've quibbled and quarrelled and blackmailed and bribed, and finally whittled down our huge list of 2012 amazingness to a mere dozen. So here are the 12 things that we're looking forward to the most.

EVENTS

SFX Weekender (2-5 February)

One of the best things we did in 2011 was pop our Weekender cherry - and what a weekend it was. Pontins might be a bit like a concentration camp, but as soon as we hit the bar and met a bunch of fabulous people (you know who you are), we knew we would always remember it as something special. We're already excited about this year's road trip to North Wales - with a spectacular guest line-up, a plethora of fascinating panels planned and a phenomenal amount of boozing to be done, it's going to be a good 'un. We'll see you in the bar.

London Super Comic Convention (25-26 February)

In its inaugural year, the people behind the London Super Comic Convention managed to do something pretty spectacular - they managed to convince the God of Comics, Stan Lee himself, to headline the bill. This, in itself, pretty much guarantees that the doors of the Excel Centre will be flooded with geeks when they open on the 25th February, but there's plenty of big names on the line-up to suggest that this con is worth our time. We just hope it can live up to the star billing.

Kapow (19-20 May)

Mark Millar's comic convention impressed us last year with its roster of goodies from not only the world of comic books, but TV and film too. Kapow promises more of the same this May, and though they're not announcing the full line up until February, we have faith that the kinks will be ironed out, turning this con into a must-attend event.

MCM Expo (26-27 May)

Of all London cons, the MCM Expo holds a special place in our heart. It was where we were first welcomed into the bosom of the geek fraternity, and where we met many of the bloggers and fans that we are lucky enough to call friends today. It's a bit far off for us to speculate on the line-up, but we have faith that all the usual suspects will be in attendance. We wouldn't miss it for the world.

Being Human S4 (BBC3, early 2012)

Being Human has long been one of our favourite TV series, but the show is going to have a lot of work to do this year following the exit of top vampire totty Aidan Turner and the imminent departure of the lovely Russell Tovey. Toby Whithouse has promised that we need not worry - the show will go on, and it will be good - but the proof, as they say, will be in the pudding.

Awake (NBC, March 2012)

Though it hasn't been picked up by a UK channel yet, Awake is one of the shows we're most looking forward to seeing in 2012. The Inception-style thriller stars Jason Isaacs as a cop who wakes up after an accident to find he is living in two different realities - and finds he can't choose between them. Not convinced? Watch the trailer, it'll do the trick.

Doctor Who (BBC1, Autumn 2012)

We're going to have to wait until the autumn to see it, but it's becoming very clear that next year's Doctor Who is going to be pretty spectacular as the seventh series leads up to the show's 50th Anniversary. We'll bid farewell to Amy and Rory, welcome (probably) a new companion, and see Matt Smith take on a whole host of monsters in his own, wonderful, inimitable style. The Moff has promised that it'll be "epic, huge, massive, indulgent... all your treats at once," and we're damn sure he can live up to his claims.

Game Of Thrones S2 (2012, TBC)

Just when we thought that TV was about as good as it could get, along came the tour de force that was Game Of Thrones and slapped us around the face with its sumptuous, epic, brilliance. George R.R. Martin's novels were brought to life faithfully and fabulously, and we can't wait to see how A Clash Of Kings plays out on screen.

MOVIES

The Avengers (27 April, 2012)

We know we're not the only ones who prize The Avengers above pretty much every movie that's set to hit the cinema next year. The superhero team up starring Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner and Scarlett Johansson can't really go wrong in our eyes - mostly because we have put our every bit of faith into the abilities of director Joss 'The Great' Whedon. It's going to be amazing, we just know it.

Prometheus (1 June, 2012)

Many people, including us, haven't really figured out what the frack Ridley Scott's Prometheus is all about. But we are very excited about it. The film's details have been one of the most closely guarded secrets in the biz, but we do know that it does tie in to the Alien franchise, though there's likely to be more to it than simply scaring the bejesus out of us.

The Dark Knight Rises (20 July, 2012)

When Batman Begins hit screens in 2005, it was clear that Christopher Nolan had pretty much changed the face of comic book movies forever. And in 2012, his saga will come to an end as he, and star Christian Bale, bow out of the franchise in what looks likely to be spectacular fashion. But will the Dark Knight triumph over Gotham's villains?

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (14 December, 2012)

Oh, Middle Earth, how we've missed you. Of all the things that are set to float our boat in 2012, The Hobbit might be the one we're most excited about. We just can't wait for Peter Jackson to work his magic on Tolkien's classic again, as we return to Hobbiton for this simply gorgeous-looking prequel. Just hearing Gandalf's gravelly tones again sends shivers down our spine.

So there you have it. We know we've missed a hell of a lot - The Hunger Games! Spider-Man! Total Recall! Alcatraz! True Blood season 4! The Fades series 2 (we remain ever optimistic)! Thought Bubble! - the list goes on and on and on, but we had to whittle it down somehow, didn't we?

Yep, 2012 is going to be one hell of a year.

Game Of Thrones: George R.R. Martin Releases Winds Of Winter Chapter

We love George R.R. Martin. The man has made our day by giving us a little taste of what's to come in the sixth book of his A Song Of Ice And Fire series, Winds Of Winter.

We'll stay away from spoilers, for those who haven't made their way through book five, A Dance With Dragons, just yet. But suffice to say the chapter is told from the point of view of a treacherous character, and gives us an insight into the plans of one of Westeros' would-be kings.

Martin posted the chapter on his website, saying: "As a Christmas gift to all my loyal fans and readers, I've just replaced the (long published) sample chapters from A DANCE WITH DRAGONS on my website with an unpublished sample chapter from THE WINDS OF WINTER.

Go ye to "Ice & Fire Sample" on my website and enjoy."

But he did have a word of warning for his loyal and enthusiastic fans: "The chronology, as usual, is tricky. This chapter will be found eventually at the beginning of WINDS, but as you will be able to tell from context, it actually takes place before some of the chapters at the end of DANCE."

Should you wish to get a glimpse at what's coming next in the simply brilliant fantasy series, check out Mr Martin's website. Seriously. It's really good.

Martin also revealed that a different sample chapter from Winds Of Winter will be included at the end of the paperback edition of A Dance With Dragons when it is published next July.

Dark Knight Rises Star Anne Hathaway Talks Catwoman

We've got to admit to being somewhat about Christopher Nolan's casting of Anne Hathaway as Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises. Sure, she can act, but is she sexy enough to play the sultry and seductive Selina Kyle?

We're determined to reserve judgement until we see the film next year, but in the meantime, Hathaway's enthusiasm for the film fills us with hope.

The actress has been chatting to the LA Times about all things Bat-related - including her skintight costume.

“I really got into the comics after I was cast and I like that when she made her first appearance she meets Bruce Wayne and says ‘Let go of me or I’ll claw your eyes out,’ and he says, ‘Careful, claws in or papa spank,’” Hathaway said. “So I’m glad we’ve come a long way since then. I’m not saying anything against Bob Kane, though.”

Kane, the credited creator of Batman (writer Bill Finger is now acknowledged as co-creator but wasn’t at the time), said that the movie star Hedy Lamarr was a key inspiration for Catwoman, so Hathaway has taken the same inspiration for her portrayal.

“I know this sounds odd, but her breathing is extraordinary,” Hathaway said. “She takes these long, deep, languid breaths and exhales slowly. There’s a shot of her in Ecstasy exhaling a cigarette and I took probably five breaths during her one exhale. So I started working on my breathing a lot.”

But, while Halle Berry's lacklustre performance is unlikely to put the actress under pressure, is she worried about following in the feline footsteps of the somewhat more iconic Julie Newmar and Michelle Pfeiffer?

Erm… no.

“What’s come before doesn’t limit or even affect this new version. It doesn’t affect me because each Catwoman – and this is true in the comics as well – she is defined by the context of the Gotham City created around her. Catwoman is so influenced by Gotham and whoever is creating Gotham at the time. Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman was informed by Tim Burton’s Gotham and Eartha Kitt was informed by Adam West’s Gotham. You have to live in whatever the reality of the world is and whatever Gotham is.”

So how would she describe Nolan's Gotham?

“Gotham City is full of grace,” Hathaway added. “You look at Heath’s performance as the Joker, there was a lot of madness there but there was also a grace and he had a code there. There’s a lot of belief and codes of behavior in Gotham and my character has one, too. A lot of the way she moves and interacts with people is informed by her worldview. Chris has given us all such complex, defined, sophisticated world views that it’s just a matter of doing your homework and getting underneath the character’s skin.”

We'll keep our fingers crossed that Hathaway gets an A*.

The Avengers News Round Up

Two pieces of Avengers related news items to whet your appetites today, Marvel fans.

Firstly, there were gasps of horror and revulsion when Joss "Bow Down" Whedon recently announced his intention to release his superhero extravaganza, The Avengers, in 3D. Obviously keen to set the minds (and acerbic tongues) of fan-boys and girls at rest, Whedon later explained how he envisions the 3D elements of the film to come together.

“The Avengers' isn't obnoxiously 3D,” he explained to JoBlo. "There's no, 'Oh look, we're going to spend 20 minutes going through this tunnel because it's in 3D!' And no one is pointing at the screen the entire time. But it's an action movie. Things tend to hurtle toward the screen anyway.”

Whedon also explained how he was thinking about the conversion process "every second" while filming so the 3D format will have a clear place in the movie, as opposed to being used in a gimmicky fashion. "There definitely are movies that shouldn't be in 3D,” he said (*cough* Resident Evil et al *cough*).

And he’s looking forward to exploiting some fancy 3D techniques in The Avengers, enthusing: "Yeah, it's fun! I'm not a big fan of extreme long lens, talky movies - I like to see the space I'm in and relate to it, so 3D kinda fits my aesthetic anyway. And the technology has advanced so far in the past couple years.”

Secondly and finally, two new images from The Avengers have been released. The first features Chris Evans as Captain America and Chris Hemsworth as Asgard’s finest, Thor. GG♥SF don’t mind admitting we drooled. Lots. There's also a superb image of Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man hurtling through the streets. We love. Enjoy!

Our spider senses are tingling – this can only mean one thing: new images from (the aptly named) Marc Webb’s up-coming The Amazing Spider-Man movie have been released.

Featuring a mix of images, including Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker having his revenge on the school jock, Emma Stone as Parker’s love interest Gwen Stacy and those awesome mechanical web-shooters, the pictures cement the film attempting to go back to the comic’s original roots. We likey.

Swinger. Although not in the filthy sense, mind.

The Latest Hobbit Production Video Reveals You Can Visit Hobbiton!

Peter Jackson is like GG♥SF’s very own Santa. First he spoils us with fabulous, behind-the-scenes production video blogs, then he delivers the fantastic The Hobbit trailer and now, well now he tells us we can actually visit Hobbiton! Yay!

Video blog number five treats us to a plethora of the delicious vistas and panoramic views we can expect to see in the film as well as revealing the town of Hobbiton has been built for real this time.

Built from permanent materials so people can actually tour Hobbiton in future, director and LOTR visionary Peter Jackson reveals, “It’s going to be here for decades to come.”

As well as marvelling at the intricate work gone into creating Hobbiton and the surrounding areas, we also get a sneak peek at Ian “You Shall Not Pass!” McKellen (Gandalf) and Elijah Wood (Frodo) in costume and on set. Joyous stuff.

We don’t know about you, but we started to get a bit misty eyed when watching footage from the original 2000 movie contrasted against film from the forth-coming movie. “It’s weird when you come back to a place you never thought you’d see again. To be standing there with Elijah dressed up as Frodo – it’s the nearest I’ll ever come to a time machine,” Jackson muses.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hits UK cinemas 14 December 2012. Its times like this we wish we had Doc and the DeLorean, or the Doctor and the TARDIS. Whichever, we’re not fussy.

Buffy Reboot Scrapped Due To Disappointing Script

We're not mean girls at GG♥SF HQ, in fact, we're extremely nice. But sometimes, we hear something that - despite potentially being sad for others - has us rejoicing. And this is one of those days.

We don't feel bad about it, we're fairly sure we're still up when it comes to karma.

Yes, the Buffy The Vampire Slayer reboot that we so lamented has been officially scrapped - or "staked" as one website put it, arf, arf.

Screenwriter Whit Anderson, who had been hired to attempt to emulate Joss 'The Great' Whedon's greatness, has been booted from the project after delivering a script which "fell far short of expectations and, in the end, was rejected completely," according to the Los Angeles Times.

Well, really, what were they expecting?

Apparently a new writer is being sought, but rumour has it the project has "lost steam" following negative fan reaction and Anderson's disappointing effort.

And, just in case you're thinking we're not very nice after all, let us reassure you that GG♥SF aren't the only ones who'll be cracking open the champs after hearing this news.

Several original Buffy cast and crew were outspoken about what a horrible idea it was, including the series' leading lady.

"I think it's a horrible idea," Sarah Michelle Gellar said earlier this year. "To try to do a 'Buffy' without Joss Whedon, I mean that's, like, honestly, to be incredibly non-eloquent: that's the dumbest idea I've ever heard."

And former Buffy writer Marti Noxon told MTV News in early 2011: "It’s hard to imagine anybody but Joss bringing that to the screen. I wouldn’t want to be the person trying to write it. And I worked on the show, but I would not want to be that [person] because the fans are very loyal. They’re excruciatingly loyal, unless they hate you, in which case they’re excruciating about that too."

See? NOBODY WANTS THIS TO HAPPEN. Now if only somebody would make those movie fat-cats listen to us.

Virgin Media TV Awards Celebrate Sci-Fi

There's nothing we like more than an institution that champions and celebrates our favourite genre.

So we're proper chuffed to see some of our favourite shows up for nomination in this year's Virgin Media TV awards.

From Doctor Who, to Merlin, Fringe, Being Human, Misfits and more (we don't have the time to name-check them all, what do you want from us?), there's a whole host of TV series to support by voting.

As well as keeping the geeks happy with a dedicated sci-fi/fantasy category, you can also vote for your favourite drama, comedy or entertainment show - and your top show of 2011. Just go to Virgin's official website and pore over the plethora of choices on offer.

And lest we forget, there's some entertainment of our favourite kind (*ahem* perving *ahem*) with the hottest male and female categories. Fights are literally breaking out at GG♥SF HQ over whether we should plump for True Blood's Alexander Skarsgard (yum), Merlin's Bradley James (swoon), or Misfits' Matthew McNulty. (Ok, not actual fist fights but there is a bit of heated debate happening…)

We are all agreed, though, that gorgeous outgoing Doctor Who companion Karen Gillan gets our vote for hottest female.

The Prometheus Trailer FINALLY Lands

So we're thrilled whenever we get the slightest glimpse of him on screen, the latest of which has come courtesy of another of our favourite things - Chuck.

The comic book icon guest stars in the episode Chuck Versus The Santa Suit, as a spy (amazing) with an eye for the laydeez (well, by 'laydeez' we mean General Beckman). And who wouldn't be suckered by his charms?

It's perfect. Just perfect.

Sneak Peek! The Dark Knight Rises

It's a full seven months before we'll get to see Batman return (aha!) in Christian Bale's third and final adventure as the iconic DC superhero, but Warner Bros. continue to tease us with goodies from the movie.

After getting all excited by the prologue and the official trailer, the latest look-see we've been treated to are a couple of stills (previously seen in Empire magazine), which show Tom Hardy's Bane in all his bulky, bad-ass glory.

The first sees Bane standing atop a military vehicle, surrounded by mercenaries and holding a photo of the deceased Harvey Dent. The second, gives us a glimpse at a stand-off between the villain and The Bat.

Meanwhile, word on the grapevine is that Christopher Nolan has been asked to revisit the sound quality of Bane's voice, following critics' frustrations that the actor can barely be heard.

Nolan has responded to requests to change the sound mix by saying that he will only tweak it slightly rather than completely change it, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

An executive said: "Chris wants the audience to catch up and participate rather than push everything at them. He doesn't dumb things down. You've got to pedal faster to keep up."

The Dark Knight Rises opens in cinemas on July 20, 2012.

GG♥SF turned radio-active green last week when we learned some lucky so-and-sos had watched six minutes of exclusive content from the forth-coming Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises.

But fear not, some crafty types have leaked the exclusive content online for your viewing pleasure. As you’d expect, the quality of the leaked video isn’t amazing, but the action on screen and the script are. Uh-mazing.

Featuring Tom Hardy’s character, Bane, we’re starting to get a feel for the way this character will be played: Smart, nefarious and brutally strong. We can’t effing wait! You can read The Dark Knight Rises Prologue here.

The final instalment of Nolan’s darker Batman saga features returning characters Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman, and Gary Oldman as Jim Gordon. New cast members include Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle/Catwoman and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake.

Sneak Peek! New Doctor Who Christmas Special Pictures Released

By 7pm on Christmas Day, we'll be done with the family, turkey and pressies, and settling in for a full hour of geektastic goodness with the Doctor Who Christmas Special - a television tradition at GG♥SF HQ.

And we've been promised that the Moffat-penned episode, The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe, won't disappoint, with it's magical story and stellar guest cast.

We're doing everything we can to avoid spoilers, but we couldn't help but be intrigued by this latest bunch of pictures doing the rounds on the interweb. Is it just us, or are the wooden people pretty creepy?

Following the devastating news that 2012 will be Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill's final year on the show (bah! Humbug), this should be just the thing to put Who back in our good books.

The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe airs on Christmas Day at 7pm on BBC One.

The Dark Knight Rises Bane Prologue: What The Critics Said

We haven't been lucky enough to see The Dark Knight Rises Bane prequel (boo!).

But a bunch of people we know have.

So we're shamelessly ripping off their reviews to bring you the professionals' verdict on the first glimpse at Christopher Nolan's final Batman movie.

The seven-minute prologue sees Tom Hardy take centre stage, as Aidan Gillen's FBI agent introduces us to the buffed-up big bad, Bane by way of a stand-off on an aeroplane.

Without further ado - here's our round-up.

**WARNING: A few teeny-tiny-weeny spoilers may follow.**

Sky Movies: "The sense of awe and wonder Nolan has a grasp of is incredible. The prologue reminds you of the first time you saw TDK, when you didn't know what was going to happen next. Nolan teases stories out. Mysteries wrapped in riddles, only revealed when Nolan says so. That's fine. In Nolan we trust. As long as he does something about the sound."

Empire: "The major feeling we were left with is that we want to see more, and we want to see it right now."

io9: "It was seven minutes of action and intensity — with lots of good, and one big bad… All in all, this was slick Christopher Nolan action, delivered on a hot plate of sexy espionage and daredevil trickery. But this movie will now live on die on one thing — will people be able to hear Bane?"

Den of Geek: "Nolan’s one of those directors who’s brilliant at menace. It’s something that lurks in all his films, but in The Dark Knight Rises, the air’s thick with doom, and this may be his coldest, bleakest film since Insomnia. The mood, even in these six minutes, is apocalyptic – Bane looks like a beefed-up grim reaper, and one look at him makes me wonder just what terrible things this film has in store for the Caped Crusader."

Hey U Guys: "These first few minutes flew by, but Nolan certainly sets the scene for some jaw-dropping stunts in the 2012 instalment, combined with each of his tormented characters’ determination to seek their own form of justice or some sort of vengeance over a death. July 2012 never seemed so far away…"

Geek Syndicate: "The stunts look amazing and it looks like Nolan has not just outdone himself but has outdone movies in general by upping the ante on real set pieces and minimal use of CGI."

SFX: "Nolan’s clearly still working through his 007 fixation after Inception. There’s a distinct pre-titles Bond vibe to these opening moments. The key action sequence is a skyborne assault on a CIA jet, and Nolan delivers an impressively physical setpiece here. It feels thrillingly real, and that adds a commendable sense of old school wow, especially unique in this age of digitally-drenched superheroics. These are the kind of knuckle-whitening, real world stunts you applaud for their sheer scale and ambition... Officially? We're stoked."

The Guardian: "Hardy's been waiting for this moment all his acting life, and he more than deserves it. Standout supporting roles in Nolan's Inception and surprisingly good UFC fight movie Warrior earlier this year, coupled with an arresting turn as Britain's most dangerous prisoner in Nicolas Winding Refn's Bronson put him here, but opening the year's most heavily anticipated movie is surely his biggest gig yet. The hood is ripped away and a menacing mug stares straight into the camera, muzzled by an elaborate mask that makes him look like a particularly surly rottweiler."

Digital Spy: "The six-minute sequence demonstrates Bane's intelligence and formidable physical presence. Tom Hardy's villain gets himself deliberately kidnapped in order to spring a prisoner in a daring mid-air assault. Behind the mask his dialogue is heavily muffled, but we did make out the phrase "the fire rises". As the plane spirals around in mid-air, it's very reminiscent of Inception's tilting corridor scene."

MSN: "We all know that Bane breaks Batman’s back and defeats him in the Knightfall comic book. The question on everyone’s lips is this: Will Christopher Nolan kill off Batman? It’s impossible to take a suggestion from this prologue. But, with the new poster also foreshadowing the end, we're undoubtedly supposed to be contemplating a bat-death."

The new trailer for The Dark Knight Rises is expected to debut this Friday (December 16). The movie opens in cinemas in June 2012 - and we can't effing wait to see it!

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter - First Poster Revealed

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, is based on the mashup novel of the same name. The basic premise of the movie is that Abe Lincoln discovers that vampires are real from an early age and that a supernatural being killed his mother. He vows that he is going to crush and kill all vampires.

We'll reserve judgement for now until we more about this strange concept! UK release date August 2012.

First Look! Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance

Nic Cage's first outing as Marvel's skeletal superhero was generally panned by critics and fans alike, but it made money at the box office.

With his second attempt on the way, can we expect better?

Spirit Of Vengeance sees Johnny Blaze embrace the demon within once again, as he fights to prevent a young boy from becoming the anti-Christ. Initially reluctant to get involved, Blaze soon changes his mind when he learns that winning this latest battle against the devil could lift his own curse.

Well, who wouldn't be tempted.

In our humble opinion, the plot is hokey at best - but the improved effects we can see in the trailer give us hope. That said, we're keeping our fingers crossed that we're not seeing the best of the dialogue in the trailer. Did somebody say fromage?

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance will debut on February 17.

Marvel Unveils The Avengers Prelude

Whenever the word Avengers gets mentioned here at GG♥SF HQ, it's followed by a chorus of: "What? Where? What?", so excited are we to get our grubby little mitts on every teeny tiny bit of info about this film.

So we're extremely pleased to hear that we won't have to wait too much longer for some Avengersy goodness, as Marvel have announced plans for a four-issue comic book miniseries, titled The Avengers Prelude, that will serve as a prequel to the movie and be released in March next year.

Chris Yost and Eric Pearson will handle writing duties on the project, working in collaboration with artists Luke Ross, Daniel HDR and Geral Parel.

Marvel have also treated us to these sexy new character banners, which sees the film's iconic line-up looking all mean and moody and actiony.

The Avengers will open in theatres on May 4, 2012 worldwide.

First Look! Jack The Giant Killer

Mr Nicholas Hoult's Hollywood stock is certainly on the rise.

The former Skins and X-Men: First Class star is set to take the lead Bryan Singer's fairytale blockbuster Jack The Giant Killer next year.

He stars, of course, as Jack, who must rescue the princess and save the land after he unwittingly unleashes a race of monstrous giants - portrayed by Bill Nighy, who described the role as a "very cool experience".

The movie, which also stars GG♥SF fave Stanley Tucci, Ian McShane, Eleanor Tomlinson and Ewan McGregor, will debut in cinemas on June 15, 2012.
